11 Speed - Dropping gears on backpedal?

HI All,

Just wondering if anyone has experienced this with 11 speed setups.

Mine is actually a 2 x 11 Ultegra setup on my roadbike where the chain drops off the smallest (11 tooth ) cog whilst in the big ring on the front sometimes when i backpedal slightly.

I have googled and it seems to be related to chain types or chain lines, but is more commonly seen in 1 x 11 setups where the chain line is acute and the chain slides down the cluster on backpedal.

Anyone see similar or have a suggestion?

I have been lead to believe that SRAM chains which are directional have been known to solve the problem?

I have a new keyboard. So I'm gonna type a few things.

Over here. And then some more words over here. Yes. Yes. Good. Now.

This keyboard can type all sorts of words. Mainly English ones.

Maar ook afrikaans as dit nodig is. Excellent. Its bi-lingual.

Now about that chain. You sure its not too long?

I have it happening on my 1x11 but only when I backpedal when in 1st. That's been blamed largely on the XT cassette from what I've seen.

But derailing from the 11t in the big ring when the chain line is almost perfect? Nah. Sure it's not a slight limit issue? Faulty chain? Chip on the 10th cog causing it to jump off? Slightly out of shape shifting ramp? Bent cog?

Yeah that is where i am heading and also probably a new chain.

Had the same problem, and no it not a real back pedal, just that transition between pedal and not pedaling, well for me anyway ????. My LBS eventually found that I had somehow bent my cassette, don't ask how because I don't know, but well it is, eventually it started to cause the chain being kicked off! bought a new cassette and voila no more problem.

My Ultegra 6800 runs like silk feels. I can back pedal at any speed in any gear and the chain won't even attempt to drop off; in the 52-32, 52-11, 36-32, 36-11 or anything in between. I know because my friend with Ultegra Di2 was dropping his chain on the cassette every time he backpedalled, in any gear. I had to show him my bike to prove that dropping the chain when backpedalling is not normal.

Long story short, your gearing needs to be tuned to perfection, and your chain needs to be the right length, and installed the right way around if it is directional. YouTube ALL the things!

I spent about 30mins with my bike on the workstand to get it perfect (okay this was when I first built it up) and it has been perfect ever since. I suggest you give your bike some loving and attention to see if you can get it running buttery smooth going forwards or backwards. A keen eye and fine touch go a long way.

Maybe a cog turned the wrong way round in the cassette? With the releases facing the wrong way - easy to do if you take off a cassette to clean it when putting it back on.

Is that possible? I always thought with the little slot things they have it couldn't happen .... I may be wrong but unlikely [emoji12]

My mtb did that and the problem was the freebody. The grease was to thick inside. I used grease when I serviced it and the bearings inside was not running freely. . Use thinner oil and my problem was solved.

It is possible - there is one big one and the rest is symmetrical- whether it will have this effect I don't know, but shifting won't be so good. - worth a check.

it can happen if you flip it... there's only one slot that's smller than the rest.

I'll just leave this here .....
