If it's through a courier, they generally phone you up and send you a clearance invoice based on the value of the item and the duties you need to pay as well as a clearance fee, before it even hits our shores. Sometimes you need to phone them to get the invoice sent to you.

You then EFT the cash, and they do the necessary to clear it through customs and deliver it to you a few days later.

If you elect for delivery via SAPO or UPS carbon neutral or DHL post, then SAPO does the calculation and you pay at the SAPO branch closest to your delivery address, or at the Locak Mail Centre (Cape Mail / JIMS etc)

Sometimes, Customs do an impromptu inspection. Which stuffs things up a bit. And then they may have a few strange interpretations of the "source of goods" which may alter the duties somewhat.

That's why I generally elect courier for items. Far faster and they (generally) know what they're doing.

Technical correction, SAPO does not calculate anything, SARS does. They have representation at the big mail centres. SAPO, like any other Courier, then collects on SARS's behalf. For this SAPO charges R20-R50. (Could never get a clear answer to what this is based on. I suspect either package size or origin country based on my own experience). SAPO collects their and Custom fee upon collection, whilst couriers tend to ask for EFT before delivery. Also couries' fees for this are much more, but using them the full shipping experience is quicker

Thanks for this Danie.

Not a full hijack as it is import related.

Bought my daughter new 'figure skates' online from Italy. Shipping thru UPS.

We have zero control or options. The skates have been warehouse bound since the 4th April.

No-one has contacted us. I have been phoning everyday. Sometimes 3 times. Nothing.

Pay a courier before and you always have a contact.
