Insurance for bikes for trip to France

Recommended Posts

My wife and I are going cycling in France for 2 weeks or so in June. If either of our bikes show up in pieces or not at all I would like to be covered. Normal travel insurance has limits like R2000 per item lost which obviously won't do.

Anyone know where I could purchase appropriate insurance or have any other suggestions?

I think if you pay with your credit card you get basis insurance for free, but then also have the option of more cover at a small premium?

Also, get a quote from your regular insurer.

Are your bikes insured here? If so the location should not be an issue. I just tell my broker where I'm going and how long I'm going to be away for and that's it.

Just be aware. Bikes DO get stolen over there. so lock your bikes up at night.

Where are you going? Details man. Suffering from major FOMO here.

I did a little googling this morning. I think I'm going to have to sell something and head to Alta Badia with the lady!

Trying to convince my folks to do it as one of their Euro trips each year. They keep chosing yachting and Island hoping instead, told them they should do the cycling before they cant anymore!

I did check and it seems the travel insurance only pays for individual items up to about R3000 even if you pay more. So no good for bikes.

I am currently corresponding over email with Cyclesure (recommended by a friend).

I was with Cyclesure during my trip in 2012.

I only notified them of my trip by email and phone call.

It was an awesome trip in the Pyrenees!

On my bucket list to return one day!

And yes, coming down Col de Marie Blanc, I put her down...luckily the tour operator gave me a new back wheel with a 25 cassette...

Sorted out the insurance claim on my return, no problems.

Took my fiance to Morzine on the roadie bikes last year. She totally fell in love with it. She was a total newbie. Wasn't even clipping yet. There's some stiff climbing but there's lots of "flat" valley road riding. There is a road book with recommended routes with elevations etc.

I've also done a little research and there are companies that do bike trip holidays. So they carry your gear to the next town/hotel and you get there in your own time on your bike. There are accompanied rides but those are much more expensive.

OP Sorry for the hijack.

If your bikes are specified on your Personal Lines policy a an All Risk item, you should not have any issues. (always good to let your insurer know though)

No luck with Cyclesure: "Unfortunately we will not be able to assist you as our international cover only takes effect three months after the inception date of the policy."
