Sram Derailleur Poser

Hi, hope there is a whizzkid out there who can assist with a definitive solution....

I have just bought a used MTB with Sram X9 10 speed shifters and XO Rear Derailleur, with a Shimano 10 Sp cassette (36:11).

I usually set my own gears as in small adjustments not sorted at LBS when serviced or when bike sent for a wash and they decide to "play" with settings, so I understand to some extent the principles.

My problem is:

Either when dropping down from largest gear to the next, the front shifter clicks but chain does not derail....click again and shifts 2 gears.Sometimes when not derailing the chain will "try to but not enough slack in cable or power in RD spring?

Now it gets interesting, when I slack off the cable a small amount it shifts through that problem spot until the second last gear, now it slips under load and wants a bit more tension on the cable...which if I add (tension), higher up is a problem...if I add too much tension it won't shift down to smallest gear etc...

I have tried starting with a clean sheet of paper ie upper and lower stops and cable tensions to no avail.

I have tried another wheel, albeit with 34-11 and does same thing...so that rules out wheel or cassette.

Help would be appreciated.

(And yes, as last resort I can take it to LBS but that kind of negates the learning curve for me and anybody reading the thread....

Is your hanger not bent? This puts an angle on the dereileur, you can sort of check this by eye but best to use a hanger allignment tool, this is a very good tool to add to your collection as the hanger is designed to take the hit, saving the rear triangle

did u check the chain? not stretched? had similar problem with bro inlaw bike. replaced with new chain and gears were spot on. also make sure cables are smooth. if in doubt replace.

i sometimes loosen cable at derailleur and click shifter one at a time to check for cable movement.

I would:

  1. Straiten derailure hanger
  2. New cable and all housings
  3. Check derailure wheels
  4. Clean and grease derailure

Think I will start with cables and housings......I don't think ist chain as it appears to be shifting not traction problem. I know its slipping but stops as soon as I add cable tension...

Is the chain, chain ring(s) and cassette all new/installed at the same time?

Just bought bike so can't say for sure but are all original parts (can't say for chain)

I would also replace the cable and housing first.  A small kink or dirt can create that kind of havoc.

Just a note on the hanger alignment - you may get away with "by the eye" job on an 8 or even a 9 speed drive train but on 10 and up you need the tool.

On JacBrand's point 4) above you may need to remove the springs around the bolts that mount to the hanger and attach the cage.  Can be a bit of a pain to re tension and assemble.

Just had a look at hanger...., gap to chain pretty close to same top and bottom....

I had the same problem as you describe.

Was the hanger.

The gap has nothing to do with it. It is about left / right horizontal and veritcal when you standing behind the bike.

Trust me there is NO way you can see a bend hanger by eye if it is just this little. The hanger I replaced solved the problem and then I compared it to the one that I took off the bike, and you can not see it is bend, remember the amount the hanger has to be out of place is VERY little to make the top pulley be far of.

What you can do, it to try and see if the RD pulleys are inline with the cassette cogs, ie verticle and toe in or out. (if that makes sense)

Something else to check, is the jockey wheel on the derailleur loose, i.e. can move from side to side. So when you try to change gear the jockey wheel just tilts a bit, instead of moving the chain across. I had this problem on a bike recently.

If I sight from the rear the cage/jockey wheel has what looks like toe in...maybe but I'm not sure if I am imagining it. Think LBS needs to have a look.
