Good day

Im trying to decide on cycling computer. Was set on a wahoo elemnt bolt. Main reason i want it is for the strava segments. See Polar M460 also offers this functionality and according to polar reps will be about R3500 which i think is a good price. Would like to hear what everyone else thinks of the unit and are there any alternatives? for less. I dont i'll need navigation. Or is it something you guys use alot?

You will have to decide for yourself if you need navigation.  You know what your cycling habits are.  If you always ride the same routes then sure you don`t need it.  But if you venture in new areas then you will need it.  I never needed it myself when living in SA but always knew the areas well where I cycled.  I do need the navigation here as there is still lots of roads to get familiar with.

I just got one, must still take it out on its first ride.

I've been using the H7 strap with my phone (in back pocket) for the last while to get points and strava connectivity. Figured the strava live segments would be more worthwhile to me than navigation. Needs a premium account though.

Will let you know how it goes once I've actually used it.

I have the Polar M400 - WATCH.  I use this with my commute bike

I use a Garmin Edge 520 with my trail bike.  This is "similar" to the M460 you are asking about.

My Polar always takes a few blocks to find the satelites ....

I still find the Polar website easier to use than the Garmin site ... in time I will get used to the Garmin web layout.

Seeing all the data on a single screen is SO nice      :w00t:  .... okay, I am just a tad OCD and a total data freak ....

Maps/navigation is not an issue for me, not while cycling.  I do like to see the route on Google afterwards.

Remember to add a few bucks for a cadence sensor as well.  Do your homework on this, I THINK that Polar requires you to use a Polar sensor (or at least a Bluetooth sensor - not the Ant+ as used by most others ...)

All said, still about R1500 cheaper than the Garmin 520 at Evobikes - https://www.evobikes.co.za/components/computers/garmin-edge-520-gps.html

which ever you choose - ENJOY

Just got a M460 about 3 week ago, up until then having been using a V800 but i got gatvol of using a watch for cycling and decided to get a dedicated cycling computer.

I don't use strava live segments or navigation so cannot offer any input on that.

So far no complaints, it performs as expected.

Except the buttons which i don't like as they seem a little bit awkward to press while riding, maybe it just needs time to get used to them.

Quite like the idea of the built in light. Its meant to increase your visibility to other road users and not light the road. Have not used it in the dark yet so cannot verify how effective it is, but it looks pretty bright in the day light.

OK been using the M460 for 2 weeks now.

Takes a few seconds to find GPS after going into the training menu. Slightly annoying maybe but I'm talking less than 20 seconds at most, and maybe around 5 seconds at best.

Fully customisable sports profiles and display options. At the end of a ride the sync process takes about 2 minutes with phone. It sync's everything: rides and settings. I haven't needed to plug this into the PC other than the initial setup. Customise the device on the Polar Flow site and then sync with phone and everything sorted.

I've used the Smart Notification on the last ride. Novelty is still there, might switch this feature off if I decide it's not worth it. If someone urgently needs to get hold of me they will phone, and I can hear/feel my phone ringing anyway. Knowing that someone sent me a whatsapp is about the most useful thing I have seen so far. Once its more than one message it just says 2 messages received (as it does on your phone's notifications).

I like the Polar Flow website's presentation of the information. Training load, Heart Rate zones, etc. What I am dissapointed with is the fact that there are only Running programs available, and not cycling programs. So you could say you are training to take part in a 40k marathon and the device will be loaded with a full 12 week training program. Would be useful for cyclists as well.

The little light in front will only be useful if your main light somehow stopped working and you are riding in darkness. I don't think anyone will take note of such a small light once you are in dawn/dusk conditions. I've turned it off.

Battery performance has been good. I've used it for 9 sessions totalling around 11 hours since the initial charge. Only the last three hours were with Smart Notifications turned on though, and 2 hours of those 11 were done on an indoor trainer, so GPS turned off as well (via the sports profiles).

I haven't enabled the Strava Live Segments, so cannot comment on that. Am not riding with cadence sensor.

I have never used Garmin devices so cannot do direct comparison, but for the price this seemed like the best option and I don't have any regrets yet.
