Thanks to those of you that added some valuable input, its really a bit of a tricky solution considering that there are two cars involved, if it was a single car, a tow bar mounted option would have been first choice. Because of warranties on the vehicles you can only fit agent approved tow bars which are crazy expensive. Other option is the roof rack route but then you need two different foot packs, as far as I know you don't get a "Generic footpack" that would fit on any car, if you do get this then maybe the roof rack would be the better option

Having used similar decklid racks my advise is just dont use them, please. They cause serious paint damage at best. Granted it was on a Polo, but still. Used protective tape from new and it did not help. First drive it chafed through and thats it. Never mind the scratches trying to get them clip in to start with.

As for approved towbars. VW quoted me R12k for a towbar for my car, guys at Autobar in Pretoria do it for R3500 plus an extra R500 for a VW approved harness, so R4k total. Same story with the R24k bluetooth enable radio. Had a complete sound system done for much less and all with VW approved harnesses, so no cut wires and no breach of warranty.

well wasn't this a typical Hub thread, 17 posts, 3 with useful info, enough to realize the boot lid option isn't a good one, one excellent price on a tow bar all I need now is a solution to the roof rack option and the problem is solved    Thank Goodness its not Friday :whistling:

Just to offer a different perspective...

I have a clip on rack which I've used on my previous Audi hatchback and my current Audi sedan. I bought some clear protective tape which I placed in all the possible areas the clips/straps might cause damage, and to date I haven't had a single issue in terms of paintwork damage. Just be careful and it should be fine!

Nonky if it was for one car I would have gone the tow bar route. but I want the interchangeability to use it on both the vehicles, the Tow bar on my Audi is R9000 alone

the Best price so far on this rack is R8,550

Try AutoBar in pta, tow bars go for around 4k per car.

Good luck with the hunt for a good deal on these racks though, they are very pricey, especially for one that's going to scratch your car.

I've used the hatchback carriers, the Saris Bones in particular. Used it on many vehicles over several years and never really had issues with paint being scratched. Before each use I wipe the paintwork and the feet of the rack to ensure there is no dust, and have never had any issues.

QUESTION - "Autobar" ... do they sell SABS approved towbars, or are they like Towbars-Cape that make up stuff on-site ?

I KNOW that Towbars-Cape is cheap, and certainly NOT warantee compliant !!!

Face Pant fro my daily driver I cant get a towbar.  NO SABS approved towbars are made for it ....

But I need it to transport my one bike on the odd occasion - for 5km.

So I made my own towbar.  Bolts to the tie-down points, just like any approved bar, with an arm reaching under the sparewheel with one more attachment point.

I did NOT add an electrical point, as I have ZERO need to ever tow with this towbar.  But it is PERFECT for the typical towbar clip-on bike rack.

the other car was bought with a towbar.

that said .... for DIRT roads .... you really want to go roof mounted !!  The dust cloud behind the vehicle actually makes the bike dirtier than the actual MTB ride !!  I dont mind the "dirt", but that FINE grit must eat away at the chain and gears ...

And sadly, NO .... dont think you get universal roof mount "feet".  As each vehicle has a different way in which the feet is attached.
