Any recommendation for rims?

Having a look now and they all seem on the narrow side

If the wheels don't come with bolt on is it easy to convert them to it?

Spank are great, specifically the Trail 345 (30mm internal width), Stans no tubes also make awesome rims. If you wamt to go super wide then WTB makes the Asym which has a 35mm internal width - bit of a downside to this is that you can only run very wide tyres. At 30mm you still have the option of 2.25" tyres.

It is easy to convert from QR to thru-axle and vice versa, it's a matter of changing the end caps on the hubs. If you do plan on changing this around though just make sure that the end caps you need are readily available - they are generally speaking not interchangeable between different brands or even models within a brand.

In the perfect world you would have a Spech Enduro for, well, just that, and a Camber / Epic for those 50km rides. I've been on a Stumpy for almost 4 years now and have accepted that it will not be the best climbing bike, or the bike that I'll be doing road gaps on, but for 98% of what I ride, it does the job quite well. I've been tempted from time to time to get a bike with more travel for the Enduro's and shuttle days and a marathon bike for stage races, but selling a bike with replacement value of R90k for less than half of that and then forking out R180k for 2 replacements is really not going to get my share price up with the missus... but in saying that, its easier to ask for forgiveness than it is to ask for permission.

eerrrmmm .... you are assuming you will be alive to ask for permission when Mrs GluvsMtb finds out....

I had the same model Stumpy before getting the Enduro.

Get a stiffer fork - Yari / Pike / Stage / 34 depending on your $$$.  I wouldn't go beyond 140mm. It's plenty and the angles are still nice and allround.

Don't bother with the shock.

Get some MK3 Arch / Flow wheels from Chris Willemse and decent rubber.

Won't need more ever.

Jared Graves races the EWS on a Stumpy.  Just saying.

True, BUT Mr. Graves runs up to 170mm forks on the Stumpy, presumably with offset bushings to keep the geometry in check.

Graves is also from a BMX background, so he enjoys the feel of more compact frames (so I've read).

Yeah yeah, I know. I just think people underrate this bike immensely.

I had the previous generation Stumpy which is arguably worse than the new one in many ways and I did a trip to the PDS (hit the black lines too), got a top 100 finish at Sani2C Race, and raced Enduros on it.  Only thing that didn't cope was the shock mounting bolt, which eventually bent from one too many hucks.  But that was rider error - the bike isn't meant to be a freeride bike.

Ja but Nico, you ride like a man possessed!

I agree. The Stumpy is the GTI of the trail bike market. You need to be a pretty hard rider to really push it beyond its limits.

Roval alu rims have 29mm internal diameter and they work great.

It usually results in "Arsehole Tax" of an equal or greater monetary value to the said bike purchase...
