So according to their policy(fanks fanie) "sporting goods" is transported free as long as it weighs a maximum of 23kg's and isn't longer than 2m.

Can anyone confirm?

Yes . No cost if it's in a bike box and part of your allowable luggage. I fly to Nigeria 4 times a year and the only time when they charge is when I fly back and it's the period just before to just after the Argus (Cape Town Cycle Tour)

My BIL lives in Cape Town, A few years back he was doing epic and had to come up to Joburg for work so bought his bike with. When he went back kulula wanted to charge him. He had a argument with them saying they never charged on his way here so why back. They told him it's argus time. He told them he isn't doing the argus and lives in cape town. He ended up paying and was told he can try claim the money back afterwards. He never bothered.

Flew to Zambia in '14 from Jozi. I had my carry-on luggage and a box of equipment I checked in to Skycheck Baggage at the plane. Upon arrival at Lusaka, I was told there was no box waiting for me, it was probably not loaded. I explained that I literally carried it to the luggage dude at the back of the plane and watched him load it myself before closing the door and locking it.

After 11pm that night (we landed at 21:00 pm and I then subsequently refused to clear arrivals and exit customs) they finally relented and brought my box back. It cost me $50.00 US to have it "Customs Cleared".

Moral of my story?...make SURE of anything brought to Lusaka in a box. Have proof.

Hey guys,

I know of someone that wants to take their bike with them to Zambia on SAA.

Does anyone have an idea of costs involved?

i rode the elephant epic a few years ago, and packed my bike in a used cardboard bike box.  It was treated as ordinary checked baggage (although I think it was taken away to a different loading bay), and I was not charged any extras
