Hi all.. My son rides the Spur High School series u15 and is not doing badly at all but i believe with the correct help he can do a lot better. Unfortunately i cant afford the prices that coaches charge. Is there any way around this? Any ideas or help would be greatly appreciated.

Training peaks premium edition has a training plan which you could use. You need to subscribe though. But you can do so for a year. You load all your events and it plots out your workouts I believe.

The problem you are going to have is also knowing which areas he is lacking in. There is so many training plans that focus on specific areas that one is easily confused.

You will need to start documenting the issues and problem areas to efficiently target the correct areas.

it could be power, sprinting, sustained power, climbing etc. and then there is also the technique issues and bad habits which could possibly be a problem which unfortunately no training program is going to teach you but a hands on coach might be able to address and correct.

Start perhaps with a training program and see what that does as said above. It will address fitness issues as a start.

Thanks for the reply.. I must say in my opinion he lacks power.. He is very fit and can do 40 to 50km races and rides in very good times... Unfortunately the high school races are shorter.. Only around 15 to 20 in xc format and this is where the bigger stronger boys kill him.. He has lots of endurance but lacks speed..

Well, what does he need coaching on? If its skills on trails etc its very hard doing an online course.

To be honest, he should do what every pro mountain biker does. Get on a road bike, as he has no coach I would find a group that he can tag along that hammers. Will improve quickly like this, the amount of times I have come back from a break and just sat on the back of s Savage or LPC ride for a week or two, quickly gets you stronger.

Then there is the easier stuff, send him to virgin active with the watt bike app and tell him to go through all those training plans.

Ive neglected to mention hes 15 and only weighs 42kg...

weights - squats, lunges, leg curls, calf lifts - technique is key here so he does not injure joints etc.

climbing stairs with weights - simulates climbing and bigger power outage.

STREEEEEETCH along with these to prevent muscle shortening.

so perhaps some gym type sessions or power training. I battle with the same issues and have been doing FTP builder training to address the power shortage with some results.

but PLEASE stay off the juice. Too many parents that "juice" the youngsters these days and this does more harm than good.

There is NO quick fix for this but he is young and development will be much quicker than any of our tired old bodies but don't over do it.

He has an advantage being low weight so his power to weight will increase quickly even if small gains are made.

All above is just my opinion and from what I learnt from having the same problems with chicken legs and no power - but google power training and see what you get.

I think he should stay away from weights at the gym. Stick to body weight training for now.

Kids bodies around puberty are sometimes out of proportion and the weights could lead to injuries

The TrainingPeaks training plans are not training plans as such as they are weekly targets in terms of time and/or TSS. This said something like TrainingPeaks is a fantastic tool for being able tell if he is under/overtraining.

Best thing for him in terms of XCO type racing would probably be skills clinics and then TITS on technical terrain. There is a huge difference between being able to ride something and being able to ride something fast.
