Spot on. We(SA) make very good Bordeaux blends, loads of wine farms champion Cabernet Sauvignon.

Our own unique blend is the Cape Blend where Pinotage is the main cultivar culprit.

Has anyone tried The Chocolate Block, and what's it like? I saw it advertised in a Spar brochure the other day.

like all wine I've had a few good bottles and a few bad ones, Don't think it's worth price, but that's my own taste palette

I am still searching for that specific taste of red that I am wanting. I guess it will be a never ending quest.....

I must mention the Landskroon Cape Blend if you are after something sweeter, but that still has a well developed taste and nose.

And lately the Boschendal Shiraz has been good.

I am not too big a fan of a Pinotage. Tried the Diemersfontein Pinotage. Just a tad too dry

There are some great pinot noirs available: Meerlust, Lieben on the more serious end, with DMZ, Cathy Marshall, Paul Cluver at the lighter (palate and wallet) end.

Yes, the Meerlust Rubicon has been around for many years, I can remember buying it in the 90's already, I believe it was specifically created to rival the Bordeaux blends from France,...great wine farm as well, I enjoyed many a fine afternoon there.

I got to try a bottle of wine as old as I am the other day.

there was a big batch from an old cellar - this one faired better than most.

Thanks. Will keep it in mind.

Everytime I go back to the shop, I open this thread and check the suggestions.

What is so special about the Rubicon to deserve the hectic price tag it comes with?

Terrior, history, institutional knowledge, marketing, aspiration, scarcity. Primarily though, consistent high quality over a long period of time. Meerlust is a South African equivalent of a Bourdeaux First Growth: Margaux, Latour, Lafite-Rothschild, Haut-Brion, Mouton-Rothschild.

The Rubicon is quite special and won't &!#$ up a cheese burger.

The Meerlust I referred to above is their Pinot Noir, retails about R260/bottle, well below the Rubicon tag.

Wow, I would love to find that somewhere, I am a big fan of the Meerendal range, they make really nice wines. Not to pry and you dont need to answer if you dont want to but  do you know what that would retail for now? I am guessing around 400 bucks?

I am a bit of a "snob" with wines. On the whole I dont like blends (but will drink bordeaux style any day ! Go figure), but I like drinking single varietal and usually estate, especially when we go tasting. Otherwise will drink most wine and really enjoy the tasting aspect.

I like this idea of going to a wine farm and tasting the wine from grapes on the farm and single variety. Its just so cool to know the grapes have not been bought in co-op style from far flung places.

honestly not a clue, I didn't have to buy it. With wines like this it really subjective as the cellaring and condition is so important. Way above my pay grade/palate

So I came across this at the local bottle store. It's the only chocolate inspired wine they have, and it costs 60 bucks. Will try it out later.e19b1dab5128aca9406ed8ff4f3b94d6.jpg

Seems the label on this bottle is a bit deceiving. What I thought would be a chocolate wine, turned out tasting very much like a dry red. It was quite enjoyable though.

If you're looking for a proper chocolate / coffee style wine, go get a bottle of Diemersfontein Pinotage. About double the price of that Chocoholic stuff, and infinitely more enjoyable.

After Ive ridden the mtb trail at Dornier, I decided to go back for a wine tasting.

Their Cocoa Hill entry level red is very nice, one of the best in the R60-ish price bracket Ive had. I plan to stock up on a few, should age well.

The Siren shiraz was also exceptional, more expensive, but worth it

Can anyone recommend a nice dry white?

Less expensive: Vergenoegd Runner duck white - Suavignon Blanc

More expensive: Thistle&Weed Duwweltjie Chenin Blanc (if you can find any)

Expensive: Vergelegen GVB white blend
