Did you approach Eikestadnuus yet.?.. not like that going to help, but at least will broaden the awareness of the crime here.

I am being patient before i start approaching the media... I think it is possible to have the issues addressed and have it addressed amicably without getting ugly. This however depends on all parties coming together and working to find solutions, once i have exhausted the amicable route and found no joy from the responsible parties will i be taking the gloves off, this however will require support form all of us that enjoy cycling.........

Your approach is commendable, I respect that!

If you need assistance, please feel free to PM, and I will do my best to help. I’m not sure what I can actually do, but guys like you deserve support.

You need support. A few like-minded people on a WhatsApp group offering a few minutes a day to brainstorm ideas will not only bring you closer to various possible solutions you can explore, but will also offer you motivation to continue. Above all, you need motivation especially if you are hitting brick walls from the people you've trusted enough to approach.

Agreed.....this will happen soon and a whats app group will be established, but not just for us as cyclist to discuss the various issues but also the various institutions that are responsible for our safety and the associations taking or membership fees for who knows what all. I am still of the opinion that when we have the backing of our various cycling associations, clubs and cyclists combined we are a force to be reconned with and when we all stand together the municipalities will have no other option but to listen to us and relay funds to certain security initiatives.

Stellenbosch for example now have 3 x events that i know of, starting or finishing in this town. They have a vast number of cyclist stopping for coffee and or breakfast each weekend....why should they benefit from this if they are not interested in implementing measure to .....REDUCE THE CRIME ISSUES ... in known hot spots....

I know there are many areas of risk, but we have to start somewhere.....

There have been attacks and stolen bikes at this spot since I was at the university 2004 - 2008.

The fact that it's a high unemployment, low income area is no excuse for the authorities not to have "peace monitors" or something in place permanently during daylight hours.

Great job opportunity for the community and as a town that hosts a World Cup, international team's training camps and some of the biggest races in SA it's simply not good enough.

Even an opportunity for Spez (aren't they based in Stellenbosch?) to sponsor some peace monitors or something.

So true and there's a lot more than 3 events if you include the MTB events. Origin of Trails is happening this weekend as well.

and the world cup is coming as well in 2018....as mr Botha from stellenbosch fietsry said..."Oh please forbid something happens to one of the UCI riders....makes me question our lives vs a UCI rider...

I do think that this sort of thing should be helped along by the bike companies. Ultimately if people feel too scared to ride, they will stop buying bikes.

they had after the contract expired with the security company decided to use members of the community to secure, i could've told them it wont work as these community members and their families are threatened by the thugs......but i agree, businesses benefiting form us as cyclists supporting their establishments should look at maybe getting involved in some form of contribution. I will support an establishment that contributes towards me instead of just taking the whole time......

I have noticed that the boundary wall just before the Kayamandi traffic light, has been almost completely demolished in one spot. This did not use to be like that, the wall ran the whole stretch from even way before the traffic camera, right up to, and around, the corner where the traffic light is.

This now gives the perps an easy escape route into the shacks, where they can quickly disappear,.

Just by having this wall repaired (and maybe raised up a bit), they will make things a great deal more difficult for the hit and run bandits.

We are a fair amount of cyclists that used to cycle from Durbanville to Stellies, for our weekly coffee run, and that used to include a bite to eat at on of the popular spots.

We have now cut this down to maybe once a month, if at all.

Not saying that this is a huge financial loss to the eateries, or even Stellies, but if this is a trend that continues with other training groups, it can quickly amount to a substantial loss.

I'm following this thread closely and with interest. PPA's response to this will play a part in my decision to renew my membership, or not.

Riding out on the Banhoek Conservancy side last week we stopped and chatted to one of the farmers. Apparently there are plans afoot to implement drone patrols in some of the areas such as Botmaskop. Commercial level drones with a flir camera systems.
If this comes about it could be part of a good proactive solution.

that is exactly what this call it "campaine" is all about. I would have thought a more urgent response from the PPA would've been the order of the day but apparently NOT. Not a single reply except, "were you outside kayamandi when this happened"? Since then nothing...

the purps that robbed and injured me jumped the wall as if there was nothing......leave it there.. bottom line...ONE CCTV camera placed in the right position can do the job of 7 security officers......and it also gives irrefutable evidence...why then since all this time have they not placed a camera in this area as a known hot spot??? o yes.. BUDGET..

I need support "ALOT", so please share this with all your cycling groups and fraternities.....the more i get the stronger the voice becomes.....

Someone is smoking there socks.  The commercials for drones is just not viable.  , but that for another topic.

A good few years ago I emailed Dan Hugo, mainly because he was promoting Songo, is passionate about the sport and the community, and lives (lived) in Stellenbosch.

He was keen to get involved, and said that according to him it is not the Kyamandi community, but rather outsiders.  I wrongly did not push forward.

Maybe a good angle will be to approach Songo, Sausser and some other people that promote the cause in Kyamandi.

I am sure Mr Songo wil have his ears on the ground and be able to give valuable input/solutions.

Not sure if the cyclists really contributes to the bottom line of the Stellenbosch coffee shops, but from a private sector involvement, it might be a good angle as well to approach those guys for some sort of sponsorship/awareness type of thing.

I doubt that one will get anywhere once the police/local government is being involved, maybe if you approach the local councilor, but the police probably feel they have other things to deal with...... unfortunately.

I have approached the local Councillor responsible for protection services and even had a meeting...but that is as far as it has gone....all talk and no action, hence this topic not going quite...and hence the fact that it wont until our voices are heard and some concerted effort is put in place to do something..i have made contact with Songo, just got to get around my travels etc to meet with him...

Mental Mamba, try contacting those Ward Councilar and mentiond you send e-mails to the city council that are not getting answered.

As mentioned I have, once this train is steaming forward more and more pressure will be placed on all responsible parties until they do what they are supposed to do and not just talk and talk....
