Kayamandi Stellenbosch Attacks - Again

is there a compilation of where and what time of day these attacks happen?  i'm sure a trend can be spotted.

personally, i've never had a problem going up hels or going past kayamandi at various times of the day during the week and the weekend.  the worst thing i experienced was some naughty kids flinging stones at us when we passed cloetesville. (only happened once)  i've had people greet me, chat to me and even high five me as i cycled through these so-called "danger areas".

Then count your blessings because next time it might be you. Just don't be complacent thinking it won't happen to you because we all think like that until it does.

This has been my experience to date too and I have been riding around stellenbosch 3-4 times a week, road and mtb, often on my own, for 4 years now. I guess I have just been lucky.

I don't actually know anyone who has been attacked either - I hear about incidents often but there is always more than 1 degree of of separation. eg: A friend will tell me about something that happened to someone else.  It's the nature of social media and whatsapp groups that I'm now able to hear about events like this within minutes or hours of them happening.

I'm not disputing the validity of these claims (and don't mean to show a lack of sympathy), but I am playing devil's advocate; were there always attacks of this nature and the only thing that has changed is that we are now much more efficient at hearing about them?

This was happening already a long time ago / since I can remember. (I grew up in Stellenbosch and would give away my age when I tell you how long ago)

Also had all the pleasant experiences of high five's etc, as well as got moered really hard with a brick on the head @ Kayamandi - in the days where everyone was still training without helmets.

Nothing more to add, except keep your eyes open / be carefull.

guys lets not start attacking each other, we are all entitled to our opinions, the criminals attack whomever they feel like irrespective.....either we are part of the solution or we are not, but to attack each other is not the way forward......lets stand together in our fight against crime.....Not all of us are subject to crime and not all of us have had the unfortunate incident of either looking down the barrel of a gun or being threatening at knife point, but that does not mean that we should NOT have to show our support to an initiative that could benefit all..

I just hope and pray that the people "questioning" these attacks are never involved in one of these attacks, it is not a very pleasant ordeal to go through! Once you have been a victim you look at these things from a totally different perspective.

I too was riding past Kayamandi for many years before this incident happened to me and mental mamba and you always think that if these attackers attempt to attack me I will do this and that, BUT unfortunately these things happen very quick- I recon the incident lasted about 30-60 seconds although it felt like an eternity and when you least expect it. All those plans I had in my head all those years (as to what I would to avoid these attackers) did not help us one bit during this ordeal.

So maybe after all those years riding past Kayamandi our luck finally ran out! Personally and until some safety measures have been implemented there, I will not ride past there again! Believe me, it is something that you never want to go through in your life- it leaves scars.

things are happening, after yet another attack on Saturday morning gong up Hells hoogte it would seem as if some of the guys and girls on the whatsapp group "Stellies cycling action" has started raising their voices. This has again led to new energy and some participants have joined which from the onset looks to have some influence. My case is still dead from the SAPS side as not one call from the investigating officer or any of the other responsible parties. The one suspect  that was apprehended however is one of the guys that robbed me. The SAPS however can not even link the cases and now it is for me, a member of the public to again assist and say..HEY MR POLICEMAN....THAT ONE IS ONE OF THEM... and actually hope that something gets done about it.

I have a meeting with some high profile individual today, hopefully something comes of it. Join our whatsapp group and join hands by increasing numbers of support for initiatives in not only raising awareness but also holding those responsible for our safety accountable.

will keep you posted of any progress or lack thereof ...

So sad. I would like to join the Whatsapp group too. I regularly ride Helshoogte pass and surrounding MTB routes - need to come together and make it impossible for these guys to get away with their actions.

And then you take a deep breath, wait for the feeling to subside, and keep looking for the real answer I hope?

well, a dead bike thief / attacker can attack no more.  Seems like a good answer*.

* with lots of other potential problems, but one cant deny the effectiveness of a dead bike thief. ;)

Indeed, But with all the knife attacks happening around Cape Town lately, I am just so g@tvol of hearing that SAPS etc. can truly do nothing. What the vark are we paying taxes for then?

(I know some think we pay taxes to keep certain politico's going, but ja...)

And with the XCO world cup /Epic around the corner, I am guessing that the area around Stellies is going to spike with training riders etc.

solution needed. fast.
