Hi Guys

Another 94.7 prep newbie and about to do my 1st race (carnival macsteel).

I wanna go onto shoes and cleats and need some advice as some of the cycle shop just seemed as if they was trying to make a sale as there advice differed from each other.

Mtb shoes

Should i buy the Cape Storm breakaway for R700 vs rider bora 3 for R900

Shimano pedals

PD-M530 vs PD-M530

I need a shoe and cleat/pedal that will be easiest to remove especially if I'm about to fall.

Thank you

Macsteel is end of this month. If I were you, I wouldn't ride cleats as you need to adjust to the feel and how to clip and unclip. You can be in for a world of hurt during a race if you don't get this right. Rather take your time to get use to cleats before committing to them for a race.

Cant comment on the shoes as I suppose all feet differ. You may have a wider foot than others, or not. Understand one thing, MTB shoes weren't designed to be comfy while not on a mtb. Initially they will feel clumsy and weird but after a short while you wont ride without them.

On the pedal subject, most shimano pedals will have a setting to adjust the "stiffness" of the cleat. If you look carefully you will see a + and - on the pedal... turn gently towards the - to allow for easier retraction from the cleat.

You re going to fall off. Everyone does. Its the nature of the beast but again after a little practice you will be cleating and uncleating without thinking.

I also got into a habit of uncleating a specific foot a few metres before stopping. For me it was the left, so just before stopping, uncleat the left and LEAN LEFT... seen people uncleat one foot and moer the other way.. it happens.

That said once your comfortable you will wonder why you didn't do it sooner..

Practice makes perfect mate!

As for the shoes & cleats, are you going to become a regular rider.

Doing lots of mileage & road races?

If yes, I suggest a good pair of Road Shoes & Road Cleats..

Once you get use to these, they should last a long while and saving you money on upgrading later.

All the best!

PS - Search on youtube how to master cleating & uncleating..

Living room next to a wall is best at first

Cleats - either you like them or you dont.

My personal experience is coming from a bmx background and flats. Then moved onto road cycling and toe clips and later cleats.

My personal feeling is that cleats are an absolute must for a roadbike.

Earlier this year after about 8 years of MTB I decided to go cleats on a hardtail. I gave it a few tries, I have never felt this uncomfortable on a bike and unsure around easy trails.

I have since replaced the clip ins with flats, and I will never use cleats on a MTB again.

It is different for everyone tho and you will need time to adjust to them.

Buy Olympics...they last a while. I had mine for a long time only got new shoes cos I wanted a pair.

The pedals you mention are the same though. Anyhow those will do the trick. Set them nice and loose (yes you can do that). Then go ride, if you can on a field so when you fall it is on grass. Although to be honest if you set them loose and ride up and down on a flat rode at a relative speed you should be fine. Or hold onto a pole or gate or fence and clip in and out.

When you are clipped in concentrate on pushing your heel out away from the bike that will have you foot come loose. I would say try to concentrate in the beginning on tipping to the side of your dominant foot as it will inevitably clip loose quicker, eventually you will be able to do it easily with both feet. If you can track stand you are even better off.

Cleats made a difference to my riding. It felt immediately as if my pedal stroke was way more efficient.

Absolutely agree. Different for each person. I tried flats and wasn't in as much control. Really need to clip in.

OP we are a good example of how it can differ completely!

Thank you guys for the great advice...

I decided to invest abit more on the shoes and picked up a pair of Gaerne for R1300

And normal shimano pedals.

I attached my bike to an indoor trainer to practice clipping in and out and seems easy after adjusting it.

Once again thank you all for the great feedback. Greatly appreciated!

Good investment , you will only ride in takkies when you round the block to test your bike . I have Look road shoes and pedals that are 30 plus years old and i still use them .

It is easy, the clever bit is remembering you are clipped in
