The main issue with the portage is that it triggers some cramping in the legs once you start riding again. It works your muscles in a different way than normal riding.

If it's as hot as 3 years ago, cramping is almost guaranteed!

I was planning on just riding with 2 bottles, refilling then at water points. Is it better to ride with a camelbak?

Any other advice out there?

That actually remind me, I actually wanted to practice carrying my bike up a steep incline.  What is the best suggestion ?  Just put it over your shoulder and soldier up?  Or is that when it helps having a camelback?

I would say specifically training for it is complete overkill

It's about 500 meters and the reason many people take 20 minutes plus is because half the time you are waiting queuing to go up in single file.

Personally I found it tough but not as bad as it is hyped up to be.

Ride with what you trained with. If you put on a Camelbak now for the first time since last summer your back and shoulders might just not agree. If you can comfortably do 90 minutes on 2 bottles you are good to go.

My best advise is to spend 2 minutes stretching at the top of the portage if you are prone to cramping. I have consumed many tablets in the past and the stretching worked the best. I agree its not worth training special for it. At the back groups almost everyone push their bikes instead of carry because of all the traffic.

Normally I use 1 bottle of water for every 90 minutes of hard riding. But I may have to go with one bottle of my special mix (Rehidrate + Game) and one pure water.

I think my wife will be quite 'chatty' up that wapad.

I have been warned before. It is horrible. As long as we get there after about 4h30 of riding we should be fine I told her. If it rains it will be quite interesting.

I don't understand why the trekkers did not just take SIr Lowries Pass. :whistling:

My wife is the opposite, no talking allowed when pedalling / going uphill

Gents any suggestions on what spares or gadgets to carry with you for the race?

I carry:

Masterlink

2x large Bombs plus inflating dohickey

Chainbreaker

Multitool

Plug kit

Labello...cos I can handle a tan but hate it when my lips are burnt...hahaha

Will carry a tube just incase but have tubeless.

Recently attended a bush mechanics thing at my local where they recommended also carrying a rear derailleur hanger, picking that up next week. Apparently they are not the same for all frames and can really mess up your business if the get bent

Just remember, a lot of single track and for me the Camelbak was much easier. Two hands on the sticks.....

Depends on fitness level and group, but around 20-25 min total. No reason to lose sleep over!

You look like a race snake. Anyone else?
