Sorry, total noob here but i want to make sure i understand what I need.

I'm considering a new bike that has a 1x11 GX setup. Now I'm still very unfit and very heavy so the granny gear is very important to me.

If I want to upgrade this setup to a 1x12 to have that 50T, will I need to change the rear derailleur too?

I know I would need to change the cassette obviously, the shifter and chain, but does the rear derailleur need to change?

Would it actually be worth it?

Rear der needs to change as well. GX Eagle upgrade kit approx. 5k.

I did the upgrade and enjoying the spread of gears on a 32t front chanring - you get from 10 to 50t with no huge gaps between.

Can't answer you on any of your questions.

But would it not be a cheaper option to then just have a smaller chainblade in the front and when the time comes just change it back?

Save yourself a lot of money and just fit a smaller chainring. If you're on a 32T, drop down to a 28T.

Your wallet will thank you.

Dammit. You posted while I was typing. But you know what they say about great minds... Also the same about no minds... :whistling:

On GX 1x 11 its normally 32T 10-42

Option is as the guys said. Get smaller front blade and swopped back as you get stronger. But with with 28t check your chain lenght, might be a problem..

Or you can get a e thirtee 9-46 for around 3k and you will have the granny you need and use your 1x 11 setup with 32t chainring...

Sorry to hijack but I am in a similar position i.e. pretty much a noob when it comes to these technical issues.

I have a GX 1 x 11, 30T and 10-42 - my issue is the opposite in that I have plenty of granny gear but find I run out of big gears on the flat and downhills.

Would an e-thirteen cassette help or do I need to also to go one up on the chainring i.e. 32T.

This.

Will be cheapest and easiest option, especially if it's an direct mount chainring.

on a stumpjumper the chainring is already 28T... but i'm very heavy and building up fitness and going up so far is the main issue.

Thanks all for the feedbacks. Needing a full kit is definitely not an option.

This one seems a good option at a reasonable price. http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/za/en/sunrace-mx8-11-speed-shimano-sram-cassette/rp-prod149197

Does anyone have experience with it? Is it a straight swap?

in your case i think it is easier, go up to 32T or even 34T if you have the legs to climb

Ride it as is. You will be amazed at how quick you will be buying a 32T for the front. If you ride regularly in 3 months that setup will seem to easy

You will need to change:

- Rear Derailleur

- Shifter

- Chain

- cassette

Swapping out to a MUCH smaller chainring is not really a practical solution as you will sacrifice major top end. If you're buying new most shops will offer a trade up option where they keep the parts the swap out. It'll be much cheaper to do it now vs later on when there's wear on the 11 speed components.

That all depends on your riding style, Iwan. If you only ride gravel roads, yes, but if that is the case, then buy a gravel bike.

OP, if you've got the cash to burn, buy Eagle. That being said, you only feel the need for it because you're unfit and overweight. Keep the 28T, drop a couple of kgs and you'll start climbing a lot easier.
