There is this other company that produces a 26T direct mount chain ring: SRAM. Anyone heard of them?

I stand corrected then, I've only ever seen down to a 28.

If you read the whole thread you'll see he's on a 28T ring with an XD driver and battling up steep stuff. Nowhere to go but E13 9-46 or Eagle from there, unless you know someone who makes a 24 or 26T ring?

Riding with a 28 x 46 will be so slow you will not keep your balance .HTFU and ride what you have until you know exactly what you need

Most run 32 up front and don't have a problem getting up most hills.

Just ride the bike as is, maybe try to plan a route less steep until you have gained some fitness and possibly lost some weight.

Then use those hills as motivation. .. If you don't succeed first time, there no harm in walking, 2nd time see if you can climb a little futher... and before you know it you will make it without walking.

If you are really concerned maybe consider a 2x10 or 2x11 and look to upgrade to 1x12 once you are happy enough with the fitness..... rather than suffering and loosing interest

As many have said, once you start riding a lot your fitness will improve exponentially. Good luck and happy riding!

Honestly, if you are new to cycling and worried about this I would recommend a 2x system. That way you still have all the range (if not more) and you won't have to change components as you get fitter.

Sorry, total noob here but i want to make sure i understand what I need.

I'm considering a new bike that has a 1x11 GX setup. Now I'm still very unfit and very heavy so the granny gear is very important to me.

If I want to upgrade this setup to a 1x12 to have that 50T, will I need to change the rear derailleur too?

I know I would need to change the cassette obviously, the shifter and chain, but does the rear derailleur need to change?

Would it actually be worth it?

Yep - you need to change the RD as well.

Probably not worth the expense at this stage to go Eagle.

If you do struggle with the current setup, swap the rear cassette to an E13 9-46. This will give you both a lower granny & a higher top end.
