That all depends on your riding style, Iwan. If you only ride gravel roads, yes, but if that is the case, then buy a gravel bike.

OP, if you've got the cash to burn, buy Eagle. That being said, you only feel the need for it because you're unfit and overweight. Keep the 28T, drop a couple of kgs and you'll start climbing a lot easier.

If we were talking gravel I'd stick with 11spd as its easy enough to gear your bike for that, but seeing as the op says MTBing I think a wide as possible / feasible is the way to go. Low granny for big climbs and long days, high top end so as not to spin out from 28km/h. On a 32T I start spinning out from around 35km/h - I would not want a 28T anywhere near my bike.

Are you consistently hitting singletrack in excess of 35kph and still spinning the cranks? You should maybe consider racing in the EWS next year.

As said above, if becoming a better climber, Eagle is not the be-all and end-all. OP can easily stick with the 11spd and drop some kgs and become fitter. The urge to go Eagle will be a lot less.

Changing to the latest and greatest will not make your cycling easier... you need to cycle more and get fit.... one extra gear will not change that !

But a different gear ratio will help....and that is maybe more at discussion here....not so much the one gear more......

Then the OP should be asking what to change on a 1 x 11 and not asking about going 1 x 12??

Perceived mindset is that 1 x 12 will make all the difference (which it will to his wallet) but not to his cycling.... hence the OP's question??

Where as it would be better to either change the front chainring else put a bigger 11spd cassette on.

If you read the whole thread you'll see he's on a 28T ring with an XD driver and battling up steep stuff. Nowhere to go but E13 9-46 or Eagle from there, unless you know someone who makes a 24 or 26T ring?

SLX triple crank with a 22T?

However this does not solve his issue...

Would a 28T Oval not be more productive and a cheaper fix?

There is this other company that produces a 26T direct mount chain ring: SRAM. Anyone heard of them?

The problem with going smaller than a 28 chainring (on 1 x 11) is that you will be going so slowly even pedaling at 60rpm that balance will become an issue (28/42 at 60 rpm is 5.6km/h) and balance below that is problematic especially if it's bumpy.

My view would be to just tough it out a bit and soon you will be able to turn the 28 really easily and start looking for a 30....

If you were to go to a 1 x 12 with a 30/50 setup, that speed is 5.0kph - so not a huge difference at all - and sram themselves do not make a 28 for eagle as far as I know - smallest you can get is a 30.

As already mentioned by Spinnekop et al it would appear that changing the gearing is not the answer ... Walk up until you're strong enough to ride up, your ego will be ok I promise and you won't be the first or the last one

Sorry, total noob here but i want to make sure i understand what I need.

I'm considering a new bike that has a 1x11 GX setup. Now I'm still very unfit and very heavy so the granny gear is very important to me.

If I want to upgrade this setup to a 1x12 to have that 50T, will I need to change the rear derailleur too?

I know I would need to change the cassette obviously, the shifter and chain, but does the rear derailleur need to change?

Would it actually be worth it?

So you haven't test ridden the setup? How do you know the granny isn't granny enough???

Go and test ride it first before deciding-in theory-what you want.

If it's still to steep, Rule#5 and TITS
