HELP needed with SS chain tensioner

As it's a Peace, there are most likely two Allen head bolts on the underside of the BB shell. If you loosen those off, you'll be able to rotate the ebb within the shell. Be careful though, they run on two steel strips that don't go all the way around. It's really easy to rotate the ebb past where the strips end and then the two bolts at the bottom of the shell dig into the soft aluminium.

It's a good idea to pop the whole ebb out regularly to clean and regrease it.

Looks like this....

Other than what was said. The EBB is not going to solve your issue on the oval chain blade and chain tension, as the chain needs to get shorter and longer as the blade gets "bigger" and "smaller"

This is where u need to look for the bolt to loosen the eccentric part (ignore the outboard crank bb bearings)

This is what is likely looks like inside with the wedge system to keep it in place... while you at it, normally a good idea to pull it out and give it a good clean - they are notorious for creaking!

Nope not the same for a peace...

As Flippa says, two bolts underneath.

I have had several of these bikes, loved them all.

Loosen completely, as in bolts out.

Get that EBB outta there, clean it, you may need a file as well as these things are usually abused, you will see two strange steel bands around the EBB itself, these get distorted and make it almost impossible to move it around. Once these are filed back into a reasonable shape and looking good.

Throw some grease in there, slide the EBB back in there and line the metal bands up with the bolts underneath. They meant to take the pressure of the bolts and not the alu EBB itself.

Any other questions drop me a pm, happy to help.

I don't have problem with climbing, but not being able to keep up on flats is really annoying. So I thought the oval will help a bit with that...

Going oval on a SS is not going to help much, you will spin out based on the gear ratio and what your washing machine legs can spin at. If you want to keep up with your mates on the flats you will need gears.... so you are going to have to learn to live with it... but at least you can wait for your mates at the top of the hills ;)

There are a couple of guys on MTBR and others that swear by an oval blade for SS. Apparently you can run enough slack to take into account the change of shape, but there is enough tension to keep the chain on. Of course most oval rings would also be narrow/wide which will stop the chain dropping anyway.

Thanks. Loosened the Allen bolts, but everything else is stuck tight. (Probably why it never even whispered, never mind creaked)

So it will be the Giant for a while yet...

This is where its gets interesting....

Take the crank and BB out, spray the whole EBB, both sides, with penetrating spray and leave it for a bit. Take a rubber mallet and piece of broomstick and tap it out, clean it, grease it, put it back in.

All of mine started like this, over tightened and abused.

Mallet and a block of wood and out they come!

The oval works on a SS just fine.

When you set the chain tension make sure the chainring is in the upright position (hahaha) with the long sides at 12 and 6. That way it will be tensioned when at it's longest and a tad less tight when you rotate but it works a charm.

I have had an oval ring on various single speeds for years and never an issue
