Road STI cable routing (right way?)

Busy with installing some road bike shifters etc. they are the older 'external' gear type if that makes sense.

The question is ... Is there a correct/ideal way to route the cables? Should they be crossed in front of the bars, should the front brake be as short as possible?

How best to prevent cable 'ticking' noise or it looking like a dogs breakfast.

The bike mechs your advice and perhaps share photos of good setups please.

Thanks in advance

Unfortunately there is no pretty way. I had a little cage thing on my giant a few years ago. It kept the cables away from each other. Never seen it for sale though.

Is there no way the cables can be routed under the bar tape? Those exits from the side of the STIs: blecch..

Not that I know of ....

Blue tooth brake calipers?

re the front brake cable - make sure that it is long enough to get the fork out to service the bearings without having to remove the cable or calliper.

My personal opinion: give me the external cables any day.  Replacement and cleaning a dream.  The hoddie area on the shifter is also much easier on the hands than the thicker ones with the under tape cables.  Campagnolo at your peril - but this for another thread!
