Entry Level Bike for my wife

My wife decided she wanted to cycle. At her request, she got a hardtail. She rode it 5 times and figured a road bike was better. Sold the mtb and bought a road.

The road bike sat in the garage for about 3 years unused. Suddenly the bug bit again and she wanted a mtb. Back to a hardtail. Probably rode it twice. Luckily my daughter grew into it.

The bug bit again, this time she wanted a granny bike. The type with a carrier and a basket in front. After much searching, we found one.

It is now rusting in the garage.

Your problem is you left it in the garage, needs to be in the lounge!! Got the Mrs an e bike, she has now asked for a second seat for the youngest for between her legs, think it’s a weeride. Takes kids to school, shops and works at coffee shops etc. I just need to find a basket. dffefe5f8532eda758fa2d65076a77fb.jpg

You have to make cycling fun: First ride for my wife I told her we're going for a long ride. Got up early, she still wanted to have coffee, told her she's crazy -  you can't have coffee before the ride. That also got her the moer in. We got on the bikes and rode all the way from my parents holiday house in Jeffreys Bay to Supertubes, the massive distance of 1km. All the while the redhead is fuming because, you guessed it, no coffee.

Imagine the surprise when I took out a picnic from the camelbak...with a flask full of coffee... By the end of the week we were riding 20kms.

My tip to get your better halves into cycling: make the riding part of a bigger experience. It works.

Listen to Patensie. He did it right.

With Wifey the ride itself was half the fun. It was stopping at Peregrine after riding at Oak Valley, making a wedding with riding at Kaleo when there for a wedding (she even painted her nails halfway through the ride, air drying them on the go.)

And for heaven's sake, take her on easy trails, avoid the tears and dikbek I endured after taking her through the Grabouw rocky trail.

Edit: jeez, I can't wait for Wifey to deliver our boy so that we can ride together again.

Savage spice! Firstly, I was told that I had to wear Versus socks and not my secret socks.

Secondly, I agreed to try out this commuting vibe with the promise of selling the bike if I don’t like it.

If you want your significant other to like cycling take them on an easy ride (50km is not easy). Try borrowing a decent bike. If your significant other says they think that they think the bike is broken maybe it is. Don’t make them ride 50km with jammed gears. It’s taken hubby six years since that disaster to convince me to get back on the bike again.

Totally agree with making it more about the experience at first than about the actual cycling. Hedge your bets. Maybe the cycling bug will bite but if it doesn’t at least they’ll enjoy using it as a means of transportation while doing other cool activities with you.

PS no need to man-splain anything to her

How's the 'No Helmet, No Ride' discussion going?

Or is that the new Bell Ascot MIPS range?

It was decided that the sun would do more damage than the zero chance of a head injury where a helmet may actually help.

Ah. So you mean: 'Pick your battles'

Nice that you can all get out on bikes as a family

A few years ago I picked up a used Morewood Zula for my wife for R10k. It weighed under 12kg and came with X0 and a carbon steerer Sid. She's still riding it with some wear and tear upgrades and a dropper post.
