Very old bike - Worth anything?

That looks like quite a classic. Those old Raleighs are always worth a couple of bucks restored, if your aim is to make money out of it.

But it would also just be a really cool project and a cool bike to have in your collection.

Interesting that it is a Raleigh, the sticker says "Product of Raleigh Cycles, Springs South Africa", but it has a BSA (Birmingham Small Arms) head badge on. Wiki says that in 1957 Raleigh bought BSA Cycles Ltd., BSA's bicycle division. So,it could be that it was made by BSA in the UK, but sold here in SA by Raleigh, who also had a factory in Springs.

To answer your question:

No, it is not valuable or collectible, but it is cool. If you can restore it without spending a lot of money on it, then it will make a cool ride to the coffee shop, or even as a commuter. If you can make everything work by taking it apart, cleaning it nicely and putting it back together then it will be worth it as a project. From the pictures it appears to be in good condition. So, don't over restore it. Accept the paint chips, dings and scratches as part of its' character. Edit: You will be amazed what a bit of car polish will do to the paintwork.

If you end up with a bike you have no use for, then donate it to someone who can do with reliable daily transport. It will last for many more years.

If it has sentimental value for you, then of course it is a different story.

Now that licence disk/plate on the front brake that would be worth a couple of bucks.

In kzn in the early 80's we had to pay for a licence like that if we wanted to ride our bikes on the road. I doubt it'll be worth much though.

Raleigh also had a factory at Babelegi  (Hammanskraal) in the early 1970's.

How many push-ups would you do for an old Prince Albert Fietslisensie ??  ;)

Sjoe! Beautiful. Please restore it and fill us in on the progress. But be patient. What ever it needs will more than likely need to be ordered from abroad. Its when you get impatient with a project that it starts costing an arm and a leg. Good luck!
