Building a Commuter

I suppose you could, but what do you do with the shifters? Maybe up top?

Pffft, SS = clean bar.

Shifters would be the next to consider, but if you go 1x setup then only 1 on the bar. If you do your setup correctly this in theory should allow you to shift without too much inconvenience but still have a relatively cheap setup.

I use mechanical disc brakes on my drop bar cross bike and they work absolutely fine.

I have ridden it round Tokai and do the greenbelts/kirstenbosch loop as well as the Rhodes mem trails and despite being a bit woody, they slow you down enough to keep you safe.

I have some Tektro calipers and levers, which work way better than the BB7 2nd gen brakes I had on my disc roadie.

It's a commuter, it's not a state of the art race bike. Don't waste your money chasing the dream.

Shimano road and ntb shifters aren't compatible iirc.

Sram is nice and interchangeable

MTB cassette and shifter? Would it not be possible to run a short cage derailleur on a road cassette?

Shimano 10 speed STI with a 9 speed RD works well.

Look at bar end shifters (TT). They work well and you will spend a lot of time in the drops anyway

I'm in the same position as you, so will be following this thread.

I was looking at going the XC frame with carbon fork route, but I want to run 1x for simplicity purposes. Something to check is the size of the chainrings and chain lines. Most mtb frames cannot accommodate larger rings due to the shape of the chain stays

I was looking at fitting a compact crank (110mm BCD) with a 42T chainring, but my current XC carbon hardtail frame isn't able to incorporate the larger ring.

Not thought of that... Might be a spanner in the works.

Are the 10sp tt shifters compatible with 10sp rd's?

10 speed TT shifter will shift seamlessly with a 9 speed mtb RD. All Shimano 10 speed road stuff works with the Shimano 9 speed RD.

Most of the touring guys use that combo with either STI's or TT/Bar end shifters

Some feedback. No problem running tubeless with those. Ran them 4.5 to 5 bar. This does mean that you may lose enough air before a seal is formed, but a quick pump and I was always on my way.

Currently have Maxxis Overdrive 40C's fitted. So far very happy with them. Have even got home with a nail through the tread and sidewall.

Have Shimano 105 shifters/brakes (cable operated discs purely because I can not afford the hydraulic cable to hydraulic thingy. Road RD with Wolftooth Goatlink to enable me to use a 36 tooth MTB cassette. No problems with the MTB FD and 105 shifter running 2 x 10. Had issues when trying 3 x 10.
