This Epic looks a bit short. Longest day 122km?

What of the properly Epic days in the past..?

This should probably be called the epic.  Small e.

(Hope they got a discount for epic lite.)

As Christop Sauser always says : "Don't show me the route profile, tell me what I'll be riding on." A 145km stage can be relatively "easy" if it's on wide open district roads, and a 85km stage can be a monster if it's on loose, dusty, rocky singletrack.

This is one of the truest things about MTBing that sets it apart from riding on the road. Some of the toughest rides I did was little 30 - 40 km races that I completely underestimated before I rode it for the first time. For example, the Porcupine Ridge was one such race. The profile looked quite easy, but until you have actually ridden it, you will underestimate it.

Confirmed. Nino will be carrying on as a Leopard.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but 320 UCI points to the winner... wonder if that still goes for the lone winner?? considering that a world cup win counts 300, the epic is a big deal to win

And then there is this post every year....

It is as difficult as you make it. If it is shorter/flatter, you go faster.

Easy? It is never easy to race your mtb. Well, it is not supposed to be when you race (against anyone or against yourself)

Stage 1 saw the end of any hope for defending champion Esther Süss when her Meerendal CBC partner Angelika Tazreiter was knocked off her bike by a rider from another batch who caught them. The crash injured Tazreiter ‘s shoulder and she was forced to withdraw early on in the stage

This is very sad, understand it is part of mtb and won't know the full story (except if it was filmed maybe).

This is poor. Can only imagine someone getting impatient and pushing past at the wrong time and causing it. Hopefully that isn't what happened.

And again, what a genuine guy Schurter is. His comments on social media about Stirni seem genuinely sincere.

Don't forget the effect the heat has on your internals. If your core temp rises, your gut will be affected first. A combined elevated core temp with a high sugar intake and less substantial food during race time will wreck you

epic lite.

Below average distance, nearly shortest, below average ascent, probably least ever.  Hard track?  Doesn't seem particularly so.

Unfit folk finishing with time to spare.  A challenge?  I don't think so.

Think it is a fine line between putting together a route that will be over the top difficult just for the sake of being difficult, and putting one together that is challenging but enjoyable.

Also you never know with the weather, if we had extreme high temperatures we might have had similar situation as last year when a large amount of the riders fell out.

A question from my side, how to judge the difficulty of the race, based on the drop-out rate, the km, the total ascent, the number of bike breakdowns, etc?
