Meentb Posted February 2, 2018 Share Afternoon guys and Gals My wife is currently in CPT playing at yhe Zando 10s. Now on her first game she injured her knee quite badly. To the extent that when she puts weight on that knee it just collapses. Ahe says she has absolutely no pain whatsoever. There was a Dr at the mediclinic tent which said it could be ligaments or cartilage. He didnt or couldn’t do mch but strap her leg and sell her a pair of crutches. Now ive got very limited medical knowledge. Could it be ligaments? And to which hospital can she go which will be able to help her. Your help is greatly appreciated. mrcg Posted February 2, 2018 Share Definitely sounds like cruciate ligaments torn. See a doctor - better a specialist. Try the Sport Science Centre in Newlands.X-rays will probably not help. MRI on the cards.Hope you got med-aid... Gen and Newest
Phatman Posted February 2, 2018 Share See if there's any way you can get an appointment with Spike Erasmus at Stellenbosch Medi-Clinic. Probably SA's top knee doc. Fixed my wife's knee when 3 other "surgeons" couldn't get it right. Prince Albert Cycles and Karman de Lange
Be4dawn Posted February 2, 2018 Share Yep agree on the MRI , That was the only way they could find that my ligaments were torn. Could be the ligaments.

Newest Posted February 2, 2018 Share I ain't no Dr but experienced torn ligaments with same symptoms. The difference though is that I was in a lot of pain with loads of swelling. Had 2 ACL reconstructions (10yrs apart). Maybe your have hasn't torn anything. Collapsing knee doesn't too good.

Gen Posted February 2, 2018 Share Thanks for everyone’s input. Appreciate it. Its just so strange that she has no pain. Lets see what the doctors say.Yup.. could definitely be the ligaments..same happened to me.. walked around for weeks with my knee collapsing every so often after I hurt it on the tennis court...no pain... even went on hockey tour..well tried to..first run and the ACL snapped. Best she have it checked out. Sent from my SM-G950F using Tapatalk Edited February 2, 2018 by Gen
FDP Posted February 2, 2018 Share When is she coming back? I see you stay in Pretoria. I would really recommend Dr Glen Vardi in Rosebank. The quicker you get to an expert, the less the additional damage. Gen
MJ the Expat Posted February 2, 2018 Share Many years ago, I tore the ligaments in my left knee. (Club Rugby) It felt like my knee was dislocated. It was painful for a bit but that subsided. Today, the knee is unstable and is a nice party trick, but other than that, it is fine. The year after my left knee, I tore something in my right knee (club rugby).I thought it was the same injury as the left. For a while it was fine, a bit unstable, but fine. Then I injured it again (touchies), again (basketball), again (leg extensions in the gym) and again in 2008 when I fell down the stairs (alcohol). Anyway, I had to go for an op. Everything was busted eventhough the x-ray showed nothing funny. Apparantly they used part of my hammie to replace some of the missing bits in my knee. Still unstable but...touch wood. My free advice: go get a medical opinion. X-ray, physio, whatever. PS: I took up cycling in 2008. The only injuries thus far have been to my bank account. PPS: I married a physio...that helped the recovery process. If you ever get a knee op, listen to your physio! Pulse Posted February 2, 2018 Share The knee giving in/collapsing is most likely due to the muscles being inhibited by the injury - it does not direcly indicate a ligament injury. It is however most likely a ligament or meniscus injury. Total tears of ligaments are usually less painful than partial

Best would be to start at casualty dept - usually easier to get the MRI clearances etc, and proper referral
