Have it checked out, dude. If it is Asthma you must not ignore it. One Asthma attac at wrong time and location can be your last... so don't ignore it.

P.S.: You get most Asthma meds on Chronic with your Medical Aid...

Thanks for the suggestions folks.

I'm going to make an appointment with the doc and ask him to check for EIA, the signs are there, but as with most ailments researched on the net, you could have any one of 10 million things.

If I think back to the past 18 years of riding I always just assumed I was not fit enough, but looking at when the symptoms came on and my training up until that point EIA makes sense.

Even if its not EIA, at least I can rule that out after the doc tests for it.

Is it the same kind of (out of breath) feeling one gets e.g. when jumping into a cold swimming pool?

I think it's more like going into oxygen debt, and not being able to catch your breath once you stop.

it feels like someone is sitting on your chest while you are trying to take deep breaths after being kicked in the nuts

I also had(sometimes still do) get the same symptoms. I had myself checked out. Do you get heartburn from time to time?

Used to get heartburn all the time, doc put me on Altosec a few years back and its like magic.

I have posted a simple self administered test for EIA here somewhere before - you could do this as  a first cut before visiting your GP (who should just send you to a proper pulmonologist for testing).

Buy a salbutamol inhaler (ventolin, venteze, asthmavent)

Learn how to use it (youboob)

Take 2 puffs separated by 2 minutes 15 minutes before a ride

See if symptoms are improved during the ride - if they are - get a proper assessment done.

Just first make sure you are not suffering from early stage respiratory illnesses first - bronchial illness symptoms often mimic EIA symptoms.

Used to get heartburn all the time, doc put me on Altosec a few years back and its like magic.

My diagnosis was that I get some sort of a acid reflux. I normally get it if I ate and I then go cycling, mainly afternoons. I stop when this happens, get my breath back and then I can go for as long as I want too..

Your experiences sounds a lot like mine, that's why I asked about the heartburn.
