What has happened to ASG events?

According to racetec, YoY downward trend of recent berge and dale

2016 - 1555

2017 - 1321

2018 - 1134

Roughly losing 200 entrants per year or c15% p.a. Assuming a R400 entrance fee that is R 80 000 income lost each year while probably incurring similar annual costs. Probably explains why entrance fees are and have been increasing without a commensurate increase in quality and/or service.

I am no race organiser but I am pretty sure that the numbers above make for an unsustainable situation.

Are you saying they lie in their press releases

Was the narrow finishing chute for the inevitable bunch sprint also part of their safety plan?

ASG Events chief executive Wynand de Villiers says the road race has increased the popularity year-on-year, thanks to a number of factors.

This year the date moves three weeks later than in previous years. “By moving the race towards the end of February, we are giving riders more time to prepare for the event after the holiday period,” said De Villiers.

“We have already seen a significant increase in the number of entries.”

The organisation of the Berge en Dale had always been at a high level, with everything being done to secure the safety of the riders, he said.

Maybe if you pay R410 into their account they will respond to your mail/phone call.

Funny but very apt post Long Wheel Base. It is right on point and was what actioned me into starting this post. I have paid for stuff that ASG has not supplied, despite written agreements to that extent. 14 weeks and waiting.

This is gold. I can only imagine a bunch of people sitting around a boardroom table discussing the decline in entries, and someone coming up with the idea that it is because cyclists didn't have enough time to train over the holidays. Hahaha, ******* hell.

They were not exactly going say anything different if they want people to believe that the event is not to be missed because so many people have entered.

They can always come and give their own view and ask Racetec to explain the numbers on the Racetec site.

I'm no ASG fan but some of the products they sell are really great.

Been using Rydon's for years also have a Rudy Project helmet which is great.

Back in the day they used to have auctions here on the hub and we used to get some really good deals. We'd pay and their driver would deliver within the next day or 2 and even give a ASG sling bag with every purchase.

Somewhere along the line they changed and when you bought something from them you had to pay for the delivery.

There's always been huge hype about their events, some stories made the rounds on how they "stole" some events from clubs, small organisers, etc.

Maybe they got greedy, 1 Porsche per partner just wasn't enough.

I won't miss them organising events.

Still waiting on Kit that was meant to be supplied as part of the event.

Have mailed Ilse - no response to date.  Only been since Oct, so maybe in need to be more patient

Agreed. They represent some great brands such as Pina, Rudy Project, High Five, SIXS to name but a few.

However it's the stranglehold they seem to want to have on the sport and the abuse of that position that causes unhappiness.

So the real question that interests me about the floating or sinking of ASG is ......

How do we enter the Jock this year?

I wonder when they will announce that ASG has new owners?  And if it is only ASG Events or the whole of ASG or if Advendurance will just take over the events and name it as their own or will Fritz go a new direction with a new name etc. etc. etc.

All speculation.

They have a chance to make this a very cool events co. with permanent numbers (Like the trailseeker series) and cheaper entry fees.
