Is this what I think it is?

OK, new BB, new pedals - no luck.

Even with seatpost off the bike it still creaks.

Cleaned all the cable sleeve mounts in case it was them - no luck.

Tomorrow I'll give the headset a try and maybe also remove the cassette and make sure there is enough grease on the freebody.

Please tell me that after 15,000km this is not what I think it is...

The bike has been a bit noisy when pedaling, fitted new pedals and serviced the BB, seem to solve it but one for a day and then the noise returned...

Interesting mark, but have to agree it looks like a front derailleur left it.

As for the creak, check the chain ring around where it makes contact with the crank. It could also be headset creak or even a cable, but that would be more a click than a creak

Lightly grease stem, seat tube and freebody

Will do.

I'm a bit in two states of mind here. This is the one bike I ever bought for the least money and has lasted me the longest. I have a very strong connection to this bike. On the pother side I am very much loving the idea of getting a Momsen AL529. I've had (and broken) Taiwanese and American bikes, the current German appear to be indestructible, but I would love to go SA.

Anyways, tomorrow I will do the steering stack and freebody.

If I look at the milage you get out of a pair of tyres, this bike should be fine for another 5,yrs.

Just joking

Spoil yourself with a new steed

Yeah, I want to. But to be fair, this is the best bike I every bought. Paid R9k for it used and currently I put more than 15,000km on it.

If the headset and freebody cleaning does not solve it the AL529 might just materialise.

Thing is, I ride my bike 5 days a week to work and back, and then once a weekend for fun. I want something that just works without issues.

in essence they all come from taiwain/japan/china

Where the company is based is definitely not where they are made ( most  of the time )

Very true. However when I was still riding GT the cheaper Karakoram came from China while the more up market Zaskar was made in Taiwan.

My Sola 1 came from China. Awesome bike. Hope I can get it sorted.

if you're willing to throw more money at it , get A simple sam for the commuting they're around 5k and by the looks they'll go for years and years

if you're dead set on mtb also consider single speed and something like shimano br445's then youll have spec that will last forever ( and i mean forever )

bearings and consumables and creaks will happen with any bike

but if you want a new bike get it

Best advice I had in a long time.

For me it needs to be an MTB as that is what I need on the way home. Let's see if I can give the old Sola one more hurrah!

That bike of your's paid for itself a loooooong time ago. I'd consider getting a rohloff speedhub on an otherwise single speed setup. Yes, rohloffs are expensive but the kms you're doing warrants it. 15000 km is about the running in time on them.

Spray penetrating oil on it, wipe of the excess oil and flex the seat post back and forth. look carefully if oil bubbles appear while flexing - If it does then its a crack !

I found many cracks on Alu & Carbon frames this way

Funny thing, on the 12km commute to work today the bike was smooth and quiet. Will see what it does on the trails after work.

Could of been some dust stuck between moving parts.
