The 29er trance is coming in 2019. But that's not what was being tested.

That might be the bike that puts me on bigger wheels. Should probably start siphoning money into the slush fund.

*woooosh*

Missed the obvious hints at Giant. A 29er Reign is probably on the cards.

Looks gnarly. I find bike choices quite interesting. While guys like Hill, Oton, Maes and most others are on the heaviest duty bike their sponsor makes, Graves and co have 99% of the time opted for the old Stumpy over the Enduro. It hasn't paid off at all as far as I can see, but Graves persists, claiming the new Stumpy has just the right reach and suspension progression for him and its faster.

If I was him, I'd be trying out the heavier duty bike and seeing how it worked rather than slavishly running only one frame. The bike you are fastest on is the one that actually allows you to finish the stage safely, not which may measure the quickest on some testing on another trail. To me that would be the most forgiving bike especially on the extreme terrain they are obliged to ride and as a heavier rider like he is. I think he was a DNF last time and Keene was 66th. Joe Nation, a privateer riding and Enduro fared far better. I'm not one to blame the bike, but when you actually have a heavy hitting bike available, why not race it on the heavy hitting courses. I'm a bit baffled.

I get where you're coming from, but there's a bit more to it than that.

Graves has tested the Enduro and wasn't 'happy' on it.  When the new Stumpy rolled around, they tested all of the versions, including the EVO and he still went with the middle-of-the-road 29er. He also has a BMX background, so think he feels more comfortable on smaller framed bikes.

Either way, I think he just needs to switch teams. Seems the 'curse of the Big red S' is actually true.

Ya, maybe he just needs to get rid of the Spaz.

I think how a bike feels is very subjective, and varies from day to day. We also get used to a new bike quite easily, and as a pro with all the help they get, getting it dialed must be quite easy. Maybe he's looking for something that feels more like his SB66 form years past. I'd just like to see some more experimentation - eg him on a 650B Enduro for this round. Aint gonna happen though.

Hammering the same point. I just watched the 2016 La Thuile EWS recap below. Note Curtis Keene's best result ever, I think. 6th overall, Jared Graves is nowhere before and after a flat. Keene rides an Enduro, Graves on a Stumpy. Makes you think...

Sam Hill took it by a slim margin after a very forgetful 5th stage. Hill 64th, Stage winner = Matt Simmonds), before which he was simply running away with it.

But it's down the order that's of interest: Eddie Masters takes third!

Curtis Keene 77th.

Graves 92nd

Richie Rude DNF

Spesh team implosion in 3..2..

Martin Maes...

Just can`t get that 2nd monkey off his back...

Nice to see Jesse Melamed & Yoann Barelli back in the hunt as well!

I am just wondering how would EWS change if riders were not allowed to practice the stages.

Think it would be interesting to see the change in results if you make half the stages at an event blind.

Maes took the win at Finale last year, if memory serves. He’s just not there yet to be able to beat Hill regularly.

Spez riders sandbagging to get out of their contracts?

I think Graves got a top 5 or 10 on one stage, but was nowhere on most others. Joe Nation on an enduro was 18th. Privateer on a Spaz showing the show ponies how its done. I cant wait to see Graves explanation i.e what he broke this time...
