Grandson's first face-plant: comes of age!

9 Years old. Rides a 26'r. Just finished 11km of Hobby Park in Roodepoort, including learning how to go down some lightly rocky single track. Bags of confidence building. Back on the smooth, fast twisty stuff. One small bump over a root, easily ridden and done so several times. But today he was more confident, right? So speed was up and suddenly he comes to the ump, faster than before. His inexperienced brain went into emergency mode and he hit the front brake as he hit the bump.

A black eye, abrasions where his bike bounced over him, a shaken confidence but very proud of his first real fall, a genuine face plant.

Grandpa's proud, Grandma's the m%#r in and cannot understand our reaction. Par for the course!

What a boykie!

I have a 17 year old who still has a somewhat skew nose from an encounter with a sturdy oak tree when he was 5 or thereabouts.......that was the day he learnt to check the size of the drop before you fly over the edge of it.  :) Good memories of the time after the tears and bleeding stopped enough so I could see what was going on

My 6 year old daughter went from yesterday needing to being held around the middle to keep her upright to today riding entirely by herself. Even throws a "los my!" your way if you help her too much. Also had her first prang today. Lots of tears but we carried on. And so the addiction starts...

It's always a heart stopper when you see the little ones going for a m@#rse crash.

Took my brothers boy down meerendal and he had the opposite problem not using the brakes at all and wiped out on burms and bridges. My gat af geskrik! But got back up dusted off and finished the trail.

I often go to Meerendal with our godson, Maritz.

Over the last 14 months he has gone from side-wheels to riding single track downhill.  For many months he would ride the "jeep track" while I would be next to him doing the single track.  Then he started doing short bits of the single track .....

Then one day he asks me if he can do that dipper near the pump house at the bottom dam - that BIG dip.  Sure, why not.

He lines up nicely, and then GUNS it !  Full speed on the flat, and just about grabs air as he enters the big dip !!!!  My heart skipped a few beats until I saw him come out safely on the other side.  He now approaches it safer.
