Clavicle Plate Removal?

Recommended Posts

Posted

I broke my right clavicle last week and have been booked into surgery tomorrow morning. It broke very close to the shoulder so I'm getting one of those hook plates put in, and the surgeon has recommended it be taken out after the bone has healed. I've also been booked off work for six weeks! Is that normal?

How long should I wait after the op before getting back on the IDT? Erg mode so don't need to use my right arm at all. Really don't want to lose all my fitness but also definitely don't want to undo any of the healing process. I know staying off it is probably the right idea, but...

A bit nervous for tomorrow.

A bit nervous for tomorrow.

I've had my hook plate in for close to 3 months now. Going to see the doc next week to plan the extraction...

Lots of sympathy for you dude! This hasn't bee a pleasant "ride"...

I took 10 days off work, then returned. So 6 weeks is a bit excessive...but not everyone is the same.

The first 3 weeks is hell regarding pain and the ability to even get dressed. Putting on underwear, socks, shirts and pants are seriously tough and painful.

I remember taking about 20 min to get dressed the first day back at work and then 5 min to recover from the effort...

While the plaster/cover was over the cut, I didn't attempt the IDT because of the excessive sweating.

When the cover came off, I realized that supporting your weight on the trainer was not easy.

My first 30 min IDT was 27 days after my fall.

I'm now able to do 1h30 IDT sessions while watching TDF with minimal discomfort the following day. I use a climbing block to reduce the forward weight on the trainer.

The pain is still there but manageable. I think the hook plate and damaged muscles around the injury are probably the cause of discomfort.

Hope this helps.

Good luck with the operation! Wish you the best of recovery so you can get back on the bike.

Had the op on Wednesday.  The pain is far more severe than when it was first injured, but I guess this is more trauma than there was initially.  An unexpected complication is that my uvula has massively swollen up from the intubation.  Feels like there's something there which I can't swallow and it keeps flopping forwards choking me.  Can't speak at all today.

Really missing the morphine from hospital - the paracetamol they've prescribed doesn't do anything...

I have plates in both shoulders. One from 2015 and one older. Decided to keep them in for my confidence. Have had big falls since, shoulders so good ribs keep breaking .... point is the plate has nothing to do with rotator cuff. This is the supraspinatus muscle that runs under the clavicle and ‘pulls’ the head of the humerus into the the shoulder.

A tear in this muscle or injury to the tendon is know as a rotator cuff injury. It has various degrees of classification. But the pain is not always a reference to a supraspinatus tear, it can be an acute injury that causes inflammation in the bursa that sits between the tendon and the bone above it. This is this is known as bursitis. It can be Acute or chronic.

See a Orthopod to confirm but my advice is to try rehab via Physio before surgery. Not only is the recovery process long ( 4-6 months) but you have to complete your rehab if you ever want full mobility of the shoulder and strength. The other reason to avoid surgery is that the shoulder is the most complicated joint in the body.... you need a great surgeon and a great Physio.

On the issue of pain. Paracetamol is a very low end anti-inflammatory and will not provide relief for intense rotator cuff pain or post op surgery. You need to prevent ‘break through’ pain from surgery and Paracetamol cannot do this. At a minimum you need a Schedule 2 or 3 anti-inflammatory such as Coxleon or Tramadol.

PS! How do I know this? Three broken shoulders and a chronic rotator cuff injury.

After threatening for a year or so, I had my "yster wurm" (as my four year old calls it after seeing the x-rays) removed yesterday.

Seeing it's a regular  cycling  accessory,  and also the price thereof, I sure I can sell  it in Classifieds.

Almost new, only used once.   :whistling:

How are you after the removal? Whats the down time?

I have collar bone metal that I have also considered removing but hate the idea of being opened up again. (It was the 4th time I have been opened up for some fixing. Got metal in the wrists too.)

Feeling good.

Went in at 09h00,   at 11h30  I booked myself out.

Anaesthesiologist (the guy I dread the most) was super. No Drowsiness.

Dissolvable  stitches so the Orthopaedic surgeon said if I don't feel like it, there is no need for a followup.

Went and bought some lunch, watched TDF the rest of the day.

Was to lazy to go and get my TTO meds  on leaving the hospital.

Felt I did not really need.

After last night sleep the muscles felt a bit stiff.

So the first medication I took was one Cataflam and Norflex this morning at work.

All is good now.

Downtime from exercise?

Was told to take it easy for the sake of the cut and  stitches and let my level of discomfort  guide me.

Decided I'll stay of the bike and exercise for a week  so. More family time.

That sounds pretty positive. I was sure it would be way worse. I think I should go and have the discussions. At least get it checked out.

Hang in there Dirtypot. The first 10 days is difficult!

Something to look forward too...had my hookplate out on Thursday last week. Operation was a lot easier than the first time around. So glad the plate is finally out!

Shoulder movement feels free again without the "end-of-shoulder" pain and discomfort!

I just need to be patient with the cut to heal and then I'm back on the bike again

I have never had a hook plate but on No.3 of the normal ones and plenty of other surgeries. I have a very high pain threshold the last plate out I only took one myprodol the following day and was all good from there on.

With your previous post I was back on the IDT 2 days after the OP and back racing 4 weeks later. Also back at work the day after but I sit at a desk all day :(

For me the key is having a good surgeon that adds the least trauma to area as possible (It helps when you super skinny, I almost had a plate out under local :P).

Knowing how you react to anesthetic and having an anesthetist who listens when I say very lightly under please (otherwise I'm out of it for the rest of the day and feel ***).

Take pain killers as needed, there is nothing worse than not being able to function because of pain.

Good luck with the recovery.

Had my hook plate removed yesterday - a lot less trauma then when it went in, but definitely not pain free! I don't feel that pinching stabbing pain anymore though, so it's an improvement.  Really looking forward to having a normal arm again.

Healing vibes man, hope you back on the bike soon.

Planning on having mine out beginning of next year sometime.

Been at least 3 months since the plate removal.

There is noticeable lack of size and strength on the operated shoulder.

Man, the joint is SUPER noisy. Hope this is just things trying to find their place.

Slight pain after 2 or 3 hr rides, but nothing serious.

Anyone else notice join noise, especially during standard push-ups when you can hear the join moving?
