Homeschoolers Not Welcome at Spur MTB League

Getting dragged off on a tangent here... you are correct in many ways. I don't want to debate training, bikes, tech etc. It's about focus as much as anything... lots of home schoolers get pulled from traditional schools because the parents want to focus on a specific sport. This will in some cases work out well for them and make them stronger athletes if done correctly. Time is not just required for training, but recovery, skills, nutrition etc

No tangent, this was raised by yourself as a point of  direct contention against inclusion. Again as stated many schools do EXACTLY the same and with the same varying results. So again, this is a very semantic point.

These kids will very likely interfere with the racing based on the above, dilute the podiums or even the perception thereof and you weaken the events. The prestige of this event is what get two or three serious riders from a top school there, as well as a bus full of participants to the events. Interfere with that formula, break away from the driving force of the schools and the mass participation they bring and you could well take away from the magic of the series.

That's an extremely semantic hypothetical situation at best, and again could apply to schools strengthening their squads and doing exactly the same, there are a ton of examples, including equipment especially. Come on.

Let's see where this goes though, debate is good, we all learn and garner better understanding, but things like petitions and slander of brands who are doing the world of good is embarrassing and counter productive.

Let's not shoot ourselves in the foot please

That is the entire point of the topic being raised, there is more than enough good communication here to create a level of communication and raise better understanding. It works both ways.

Ignore the low level stuff and engage with the many open and rational comments that have been made.

An honest and open two way dialogue is the surest way to avoid shooting any feet, even if it's robust.

Andrew - where is your evidence for either of these 2 things? or is this just hearsay?

Sorry for calling you out, but my opinion are these are not facts... and should be struck from the record

Not hearsay... not at all  ;)

No not a coach but show me a pro in any sport that only spends 2 hours a day on it. You won't find such a pro

Can actually name a few, but you don't compare  the schedule and training of a full time professional who is a developed adult to a child who is still finding their way through life.

Not even close.

Can I pose a different question. What if an excellent cyclist, who's in a recognized school fails his Matric?

As per the rules:

Are we going to petition the inclusion of that rider next year as well? What if he fails again? He's now 20 and much stronger (possibly) than the other students in Matric. Are we still going to petition the change of rules? Heck, he's in the correct school, why shouldn't he be allowed to participate?

Perhaps he should consider homeschooling to pass matric[emoji6][emoji23]

Show me a kid who is a pro.... :)

In practical terms, kids are unlikely to be even capable of proper training 2 hours a day physiologically at high school levels - and the perception that home schooled kids may have "more time to train" is subject to some fact finding....

In any event I understand what it takes for kids to do 8+ hours a week of training - been there myself as a kid (long time ago) and as a parent.

While kids are having fun I am ok with them doing as much training as they want - but there are pre-conditions for my kids:

1 - Pass at school (actually I expect better than just passing - although I am careful to not apply pressure)

2 - it has to be voluntary - the instant they don't want to do it, they can stop at a logical break in the sport (basically when what has been paid for has been received) - so if I paid for gymnastics till the end of the term, then end of term is when they can quit.

Are you saying that you tried to address the matter to the actual organizing bodies, the relevant entities that set and control the rules that affect you, to no avail?

yes directly, over a year ago, to no avail.

Kids who go to "regular school" could obviously train from 3am til 7am and then start their school day...

That sounds very healthy... can see a very productive school day for kids getting up at 3am. Also incredibly safe of course... but hey, whatever makes you right.

So you think attacking the series sponsor is the route to go?  It took 8 pages for the Hub Mob to figure out that the problem lay at the foot of the regional organizers, and was isolated to the Gauteng bunch, which you clearly knew from the beginning.  You chose to take aim at the sponsors, and mislead the conversation as to the real cause of the problem.

It would not be a giant leap to view your behaviour as vindictive, as an attempt to inflict harm on the Gauteng organizers by threatening their lead sponsor.  And you seem happy to attack the financial sponsor of a national series, who you KNEW had not set the rules affecting ONE region among many.

I think this is in really porr taste, and you most likely have done more harm than good to your cause and the cause of other home-schooled kids.

I hope Spur and the organizers see this for what it is, and treat it with the contempt that it deserves.
