11spd chain on 10spd cassette

Can an 11spd chain work on a 10spd cassette.

I recently put 11speed slx chainrings on my Deore cranks and the chain is catching on the change-assist rivets on the inside of the big chainring. My assumption is that the chainrings are more bulky than the old steel Deore rings and so the fatter chain is not a good fit for the gap between the inner and outer chainrings. Would it solve the problem by using the narrower chain? But can the cassette work with it?

The inner dimensions of 11 speed chains are the same as 10 speed chains. Its the outer width that was reduced to accomodate the smaller spaces between sprockets. I've used 11 speed chains on 10 speed drivetrains in the past with no problems

don't do it.

it might work, but the width of the 11spd vs 10spd is different, this will mean that the teeth on the 10spd cassette will be slightly thicker(maybe not even visible by eye).

so it may work, but it won't give you the best result(it wont shift 100% it wont last long and and and)

Thanks Jaws. It seems an 11spd chain will help a little but I should also add in a thin spacer between crank and BB to shift the crank out and further reduce the angle of attack between the chain on the 7th cog and the small chainring, which causes the chain to drag against the outer chainring.(phew! a long sentence - almost like marriage)

Sounds like a big mission just follow the trend and get the Eagle (12spd)

A tangential question but what is the real difference between 11spd road vs MTB chains, I have a SRAM PC1170 in stock for my 2X11 road bike, but can I use this on my 1X11 MTB?

I don't know about SRAM but they are identical for Shimano. See image (same chain for XT and Ultegra):

Thanks, SRAM markets them differently but I am always suspicious/skeptical of what difference you actually get, but like marketing panado for different body regions when its all the same stuff!

There may be a weight/durability trade off but in terms of pitch, roller and pin dimensions, they are identical

Thanks, out of interest are Campag chains for a certain number of gears interchangeable with SRAM/Schimano equivalent or are the variations in dimensions?
