Hi all

Has anyone on here ever ridden their bikes from Bellville or surrounds to Robertson? Planning to do so this coming Friday. Recon with my mtb I'll ride as much gravel next to the shoulders over the the Pass and then the short section to the Rawsonville turn off on the N1.

145km according to google maps. Should be some good miles for the upcoming races!

I would opt for Bainskloof over the N1.

There is also a decent gravel road that runs south parallel to the R60 that takes you from the R43 at Brandvlei dam to just before Robertson.

So you can take Bainskloof, R43, then gravel road and skip the busy N1 & R60

Just also be aware that there are some extensive road works going on on the other side of the tunnel which may impact on whether or not there is any shoulder available on this stretch of the N1...

Alternatively, why not take a detour via Franschhoek pass and Villiersdorp?  Should give a few more extra kms... :whistling:

Hi Karl,

Done it twice from Brackenfell, but took the Helshoogte/Franschhoek pass option through Villiersdorp. You take the R43  from Villiersdorp to Worcester and turn right on the "Aan de Doorns" turnoff to link up with the R62 to Robertson. There are options to turn off the R43 sooner if you're on the MTB.

The idea was initially to get as close to 200km as prep for the Baviaans, but it turns out to be 170km if you do the above route.

Good ride for both MTB or road. The Worcester/Villiersdorp area is notorious for strong wind, so be prepared to face some pounding. Road conditions are good AND you get to do some good climbs. I found the wind to have the last say as you approach Robertson.

Go forit !

Happy to report my MTB took me all the way to Robertson via Du Toitskloof Pass in a solo effort. Had a full lane to myself aal the way to the Rawsonville turn off. Bit of strong wind from back of Durbanville to top of the pass. But from Rawsonvile had a very pleasant ride. 160km and 7hours in total. Had a lekker lunch at a Cellar just before Rawsonville.

Was a experience and a half. Only two corners on the pass going up was not so nice with zero shoulder. So make sure nothing is behind you around these two corners if possible.

Next time you go try this route allot of gravel

Helshoogte

Franschoek pass

Then via Villiersdrop towards Worcester.

About 20km before Worcester there is a turnoff Skerpenheuvel pad Across from Cilmor Cellar

This is a gravel road that runs all the way to mcgregor but there is a turnoff about 10km from Mcgregor that takes you directly to Robertson. Lots of climbing and beautiful flowing gravel roads. Most of its well marked.
