Sprained wrist healing time

Eish guys, I think we often forget when we respond that there's a person on the other end of these posts. Was really just looking for a little insight into experiences with sprained wrists and associated healing times.

my experiences with scaphoid.

it can take forever (like 3/4 months) of not feeling bad but not 100%. then all of a sudden you forget about it.

this has happened to me twice, different wrists. first one was from falling off my bike. second one was more metatarsal.

what is definitely worth it, is getting your fork nice and buttery smooth - no messing on the rigid with this!!

Some people heal way faster than others as well. Wolverine healing powers.... While others struggle to heal from exactly the same injury.

3 months is a really long time. You may have done some serious ligament/tendon damage that doesn't show up on an x-ray but may need surgery to heal properly.

If it's overuse then compartment syndrome is also a thing.

I would think very carefully about taking it back to a specialist and asking them to better inspect the damage.

Cartilage damage vs bone damage vs ligament/tendon damage vs nerve damage vs a combination of the above might just put you in that awkward scenario that needs a little nudge to get the healing process underway.

Good luck!

Thankfully it wasn't fractured - had xray's done and nothing showed up (including the scaphoid). The GP unfortunately also didn't really give any estimate on how long it will take to heal. I was also thinking that when I do start riding, using the brace might not be a bad idea? The tricky part at the moment is just trying to get this thing to a point where I am actually able to ride, which still seems like a good few weeks away at the very least! Trying to see if this is now something I should be seeing an orthopaedic surgeon specialising in hands about, or just to give it some more time based on the original xray's not showing any breaks (which is what's so frustrating at the moment!)?

Just because an x-ray does  not show a break on initial scan does nto really mena that one does not exist - just they could not see it - but usually on subsequent x-ray they show up better after about 4 - 6 weeks of "healing".

MRI is much more likely to show up an issue - and should show any soft tissue injuries up as well.

Looking at the length of time you have been off I seriously recommend at a minimum a repeat x-ray - and an exam by a decent orthopod that specializes in hand/wrist injuries - a minor sprain would have been long recovered.

Fork was recently serviced so definitely buttery smooth :)

Thanks for the feedback - never thought about it that way, having just the wrong combination of things could mean that getting it seen to is now probably a must!

Thanks V12man, I was hoping you would add to this! :) I see what you're saying about the initial xray perhaps not showing up a break. I think the consensus is to indeed see a specialist which is what I'll do! Now I just need to find a decent one around Durbanville...

Hey - So read most of the replies on post on here.

First step : DEFINE the diagnosis. Wrist sprain is super vague.

GP : Not the right place unfortunately. Unless it's an obvious fracture (which is wasn't) they wont be able to help you. Should also be noted that Scaphoid fractures often don't show initially and show be re-XRAY'd 6 weeks later.

If its not 3 months and you still have significant pain - You need to see a hand specialist. There are 10 metacarpal bones alone with ligaments attaching them all. Its a complex things to assess.

Once the diagnosis is confirmed, treatment is discussed.

Good luck

Thanks for the input - busy checking for a hand specialist as we speak. As you say, it's a rather complex structure so probably best to have the right person check it out!

Happy to hear it helped a bit! If it's anything like mine is at the moment, it imrpoves in the tiniest increments imaginable!

Try switching hands for a few days and see if there's an improvement.

Dr M Solomons @ Vincent Pallotti.   Can highly recommend him.  He finally solved my shoulder issue after I had been to three other specialists, sorted out my torn thumb ligaments (the standard brace didn't help at all so they made me a custom one) and he also sorted out my broken finger which the GP had said wasn't broken.

I have learnt more than once to not got to a GP or A&E with an injury!

If I don't find someone in the Northern Suburbs (Durbanville side) then I'll definitely look at him as an option! Thanks! :) On that note, if anyone does have any recommendation for an ortho specialising in wrists in the Durbanville area or surrounds, please let me know :)
