Cycling escorts for Comrades runners

stupid question, but what kind of assistance do you offer these runners ? refreshments ?

We were not allowed to offer refreshments, but our main duty was to warn slower runners on the short route of the top runners coming through, so we had whistles and had to shout quite a bit. It is also a control measure to eliminate any possibility of cheating.

The downhills will be the challenging bit, not uphills. Male winner finished in 5:26 (3:44 min/Km) which equates to 17.4km/h. That’s a good endurance ride, something which many weekend warriors seem to ignore. LSD FTW.

As someone who has recently taking up running, that is absolutely mind-blowing. That pace for over 90km. Fercking hell!

i've marked the top 3 runners in the 2 Oceans ultra - you not allowed to even

speak to the runners. this race only hots up on the surges on Chappies where

the top runners get away. down main rd and the Argus route from Blue Route

they average about 23kph. the biggest challenge as a bike marshal is keeping

warm and then trying to counter the surges up the climbs, not getting in their

way as they cut the corners.

this year i had the first Vet , he was dropped on Chappies but recovered on

Constantia Nek to catch 4 runners ahead of him to finish in the top 10.

he caught the 10th place runner in the last K - not sure of the prize money

but i think there is a big difference between 10th and 11th.

You must try lead out a mtb race on an enduro motorbike, you have to find yourself gaps in the really tight sections and on some of the downhills they still close that gap seriously all while making sure you and them are on the marked route. Good fun though,
