You riding with Northcliff Cycles?

Nope, rode with the  ABSA Pride group. Did see Northcliff a couple of times along the trip though, Alex looking very relaxed.

Front of AL was attack attack attack to get a smaller and smaller group and to drop any sprinters I finished just off the back at 2:48:22 according to Racetec. Had a hard but awesome race. Love Shova!

  ... More a case to break the batch into a smaller front group and have a safer size group along the route. Eyeballs were rolling for the first 30km.

At least that's what my mate told me afterwards when I asked "why so angry at the start"

Ultimate meant naught for me as my left crank came loose and I had to stop at the bottom of Drummond. Lost the group and slogged home for a 3h02m/3m ....

Still a fantastic few days of riding, Shova itself is special.

Well done all.

Now I'm happy that I've been soo unfit this year and didnt even bother to enter.

Definitely didn't have any FOMO yesterday.

i went faster than previous years but thats due to me being in better shape. So I would just scew the results. 2016 was 2:58, 2017 DNF, 2018 2:46 roughly. recon it would have been 2:35 maybe if no wind.

Potholes not as bad as my sources was saying either... blerry locals... hhehehehe

Wind was not too hectic and I was again surprised how the 60mm wheels handled. I was going to fit an older zipp 303 but it spoilt the look of the bike and the 60s was just too sexy which is the only thing that matters right?

All the big holes got patched the week the week before the race.

Super bummed I missed out this year, came down with a hectic gastro bug on friday night so was out of action the whole weekend.

There should have been at least one Midlands guy on a black S-Works putting down the hurt on the front of A though. :whistling:

Bring on 94.7!!!!

Questions.  I see that just 34 people entered/finished the 160km!  They had hoped for 250 entries.  Do you think:

1. The sub-3/seeding index of <1 excluded too many people?

2. The cost was too high?

3. The pros/teams stuck to the 106 for the win?

4. We just don't have enough people keen/able to do 100milers?

5. Any other thoughts?

2 and 4.

Cost was significantly more for something which didn't seem to add that much more value, so people weren't keen to spend their time and money on it and rather stuck to the tried and tested 106km.

Hey guys so I done my first shova, I started road cycling this year and I have covered 4200km this year, I started in DL and I had a great first 85km and then boom, inner thigh on my right leg seized up with a mother of a cramp, took me about 6-7 minutes to stretch it out, I got going again and unfortunately I was plagued with both my right and left inner thigh cramps as well as my left calve, the longest 20km of my life. I was on for a 3h10, but finished as per race tech with a 3.35, my garmin was 3:20 (riding time) - was absolutely gutted. A beautiful race I must say, I hope to have my revenge in it next year.

Wind was extremely tough as for most of the race it was me, a lady and another guy that alternated as we had no batches to latch on. Not gonna lie, the most demoralizing thing for me was seeing all my hard work undone and all the guys coming past. #bleak

Anyone that can give me ONE good reason to do the 100miler?

Maybe to tick off that kind of distance in a single sitting is probably an achievement some people would like to do...?

Did a 2x 947CC last year, so effectively did 184km with a snack-stop in the middle... nothing fun about it, won't do it again but it is something that I have ticked off.

Cramps suck! Sorry to hear about you experience.

I always pop CrampEaze pills throughout my races, but this time round I thought I would be fine to go without it. Mistake!

Luckily it wasn't as bad as yours, but definitely cramped up on that finish straight and after receiving my medal.

I then popped a CrampNot gel and everything settled down.

Lesson learnt, don't forget the CrampEaze!

I think I figured out that it’s just over exertion, it’s not even the salt or magnesium etc as I took slow mag and some other magnesium supps for 1 month before, chowed bananas, kept hydrated, I will try crampeaz for next weeks macsteel race. Thanks mate.

I did the 160km Gran Fondo.

1. I agree with the sub-3 seeding. Reason - the course is a challenge.

2. I agree with the cost. Reason - Full Road closure and excellent marshals.

3. I can't comment on this. Don't really care about CSA.

4. I entered the event to test myself. I definitely did not enter the race to compete for a prize.

5. Excellent route. Excellent support from the farmers and their families along the route. I spoke to a farmer from the district this morning. The farmers got their staff to clean the road of sugar cane droppings for the cyclist. Most of them are cyclists. New tar has been layed so the road was fast and highly enjoyable. The water table was well stocked with friendly happy people. The guys who were with me on the ride helped each other to complete the event. Were not racing each other. Highly enjoyable.

I doubt I would do the normal 106km event in the future, because I have done 12 editions in the past.

Understood.

But doing it over a weekend on your own or with friends from home saves you about R1000 plus accommodation and fuel.

I have done a 300km ride in my neighborhood in Pretoria.  Cost me a breakfast and a couple of energy bars.   ;)

But you were fortunate to have your team pay for the entry?  And your team was about 10 of those 34 entries?

Test yourself on 160km?   Come on Owen.  We know you do this route almost 9 times a year if you look at your strava rides.  No testing there.  Just spending cash on coffee along the route.   :whistling:  :D

Enjoyable.  Sure.  I get that.

But forking out that entry fee for bragging rights.....I don't get it.  Rather then just do the normal route and brag with comparable results.

As organisers the guys need to show the value or the "want factor"

They did not.

34 entries can't be good for future hopes.
