It seems consensus exist that Thule is the bench mark in towbar bike racks...however , please advise on your views regarding other makes like Double D , Holdfast and Buzzracks please.., some are 50% cheaper thanThule ...and surely cannot be that bac... or is it a case cheap = poor quality here

I tried Menabo and Buzzrack over the years thinking that thule was over priced and wouldn't be worth the extra cash. But I was wrong.

I wasted more money in the long run and wish I had bit the bullet and paid the extra money sooner. They were heavier, harder to install and more of a PITA to load the bikes. My wife can load the rack and 3 bikes no problem, where she wouldnt touch them before.

In my experience, Thule is the benchmark for a reason.

Go to Volvo they sell a Volvo branded Thule at 1/3 the price

^^^ Good advice. Got myself a Volvo branded Thule one for a fraction of the price. They are identical with the exception that it has some Volvo logos on it too.

Not sure what a new thule costs but just got a price of R7300 for a 2 bike carrier from Volvo here in PE.

Prices must've gone up. Got a 3 bike version for R5900 about 2 years back (think it was the Euroway version).

My eyes watered a bit when I priced a Thule platform rack (3 bike). I decided to DIY my own rack (How hard could it be?) Loading was a mission and after we nearly got divorced after loading up for a weekend away, I ended up looking at Holdfast, Buzzrack, and Menabo as alternatives. I asked the same question you are asking and I got the same answers. Most people at the time said just spend the money and get the Thule.

The back up service from Thule is great. They have dealers all over so you can get spares anywhere.

I haven't used a Menabo or a Buzzrack so I can't comment on them. I have a Holdfast that I use on my trailer which is the same as their platform rack.

I would recommend the Thule. If you can't afford new, look at Volvo or look second hand.
