Howzit Guys,

I stay in Durbanville and work In town close to Charles bakery. I would like to start commuting to work and back. I don't know of any routes and would like to find out if someone else does a commute from Durbanville to town. Also i have to be at work at 7 and concerned about my safety.

Thanks

I wonder how long before we start seeing people commuting on the N1 with the new petrol prices.

Its basically the safest route that I can take to work, and the only one with a shoulder all the way

I have no excuse, I stay in Durbanville and work in Durbanville, my challenge is more where I can store my bike during the day and also get a warm shower

Can’t say regarding the storage, but no need for a warm shower. All you need is a basin, some shower gel or face wash and wet wipes. Wash your face, wipe away and add some deo and brush your teeth. All good to go. That’s my daily routine.

Why are you going to need a shower again?

Basically Tiekiedraai from Durbanville, all the way down past Burgundy Estate on your Left & Richwood on your right. At the circle hook a right onto Plattekloof Road > Koeberg Road > Milnerton Drive & onto the Cycle Path where you will meet other commuters that you can ride together with all the way into town.

I'll be keeping an eye on this topic. Also looking for a safe route in from Durbanville, but to Rondebosch

I ride from Plumstead to Bellville. Leave the house at 6, through Wynberg with the main road then through Ronderbosch. Pass Vincent Piloti through Pinelands to Voortrekker. Voortrekker all the way to Bellville. Fairly safe only taxis to look out for.

Thanks Edereese,

I've driven down Voortrekker often in peak times and to be honest I just can't see myself going along that road on a bike - like you said its madness with the taxis (and some other road users)

Seems the route Milky suggested is so far the safest option

This was exactly what I was thinking of commenting about a "safe" route.

This route will probably be the most quiet in terms of cars, however, I have heard of a few instances around Richwood/Burgandy estate which I wouldn't feel comfortable doing on my own with Dunoon so close and people from there crossing over the N7 at will.

Then, always be on alert passing through Woodstock area next to the railway tracks on the cycle path (wait for fellow commuters around Woodbridge island/Lagoon Beach if you have to)

I used to work in Harrington Road and I think you are able to store your bikes at East City Cycles, if I'm not mistaken.

Please elaborate on the bold text above?

I commute daily from Durbanville to Century City and cycle past Richwood/Burgandy Estate at approximately 06:30 and 16:30.

I am not stating FACT. I was merely saying that there might be risks involved, but I am very happy to be proven wrong in this instance if you say you cycle this road on a daily basis at such times, etc...

I have just heard of a few instances of cyclists being targeted around that area in the middle of the week when it's quieter, like a Tuesday morning 9am for example when there aren't a lot of cyclists about.

One guy was attacked and jacked of his Vipa around early January near Burgandy Estate (although it was on the other side at Giel Basson Rd), then I also heard of a guy being attacked near Tiekie draai.
