Gravel tyres advice

So my second gravel tyre exploded off my new carbon rim today.

 

Please can I have some advice on what gravel tyres to run on my gravel bike? Any recommendations? Looking for either 38 or 40’s.

I find they roll really well. I do a lot of my road training on them, but they feel quick when I hit gravel. I have them on a set of Sram Rise 60s

I ride the Panaracer Gravel king sk.... I have put them through their paces and they have held up really well.

 

They roll well on tar, they have got me safely down the local Tokai/Newlands single track and they love open roads and the greenbelts.

 

Big thumbs up from me.

Probably more important what carbon rims you are running. too wide and they will blow off. hookless and the tires will not work. Some guys trying to run MTB rims and they are often too wide.

Ye 29er carbon Mtb rims. 33mm wide. Why would there be an issue with a 38mm gravel tyre? Never had a problem with the schwalbe all ground gravel tyres that were 38mm (except for a side wall cut)?

I need some advice on new gravel tyres.

 

I do around 80/20 tar vs gravel I would say.

 

I am currently running Maxxis Ramblers and cannot fault them at all.

It seems the easy choice and just order new ones from CWC and get it over with.

 

How do they compare vs the FARR DOT tyres going for R499?

 

I can't find a lot of local places really selling gravel tyres and would then probably have to import.

Have you considered Vredestein spotted cat .MTB tyre,but too soft for RSA mtb conditions .Works great as a gravel tyre

The FARR Dot's slicker centre tread pattern probably makes sense if you're doing lots of tar. The Panaracer GravelKing (the grippier SK version is also great) or Specialized Sawtooth might also do the same job.

This is user error rather then a fault with the tyre. That rim is way to wide for a 38mm or 40mm gravel tyre. Hookless 33mm rims were designed for mountain bike tyres that have far more material in the side wall then a gravel tyre. You just got really lucky with the Schwalbe gravel tyres that you didn’t face plant at some point.

 

Google rim width to tyre width recommendations. The manufacturers publish those for a good reason.

I looked at the Panaracer Gravelking...where do I find them locally or would I have to import?

 

Good to know the FARR tyres might suite me if I'm doing more tar than gravel.

 

What I loved about the ramblers is that I've had them for almost 3 years now and they're still going strong.

Panaracer are distributed locally by Switchback Sports. Any bike shop should be able to get them for you. Online, it seems Bike Addict and Bike Mob have stock. I'm not sure who sells them Milnerton side but in CBD, East City Cycles will definitely have.

 

I haven't ridden the FARR tyres but the tread gives the appearance of being efficient. I'm just going on internet research 

 

Sounds like you won't have any buyers remorse sticking with what you know though.
