Rear deraileur setup

Been struggling and fiddling for the last while, this morning on the way out to a ride, had a quick spin of the cranks and the dreaded grinding was there again.

With some IG help i fiddled with the b screw.. got it sorta right then fiddled with H limit screw as it was struggling to get on the big cog and It was catching badly.

Quite possible that I've bent something but i ended up stripping wheel and deraileur it out and replacing everything, now its all moving fine but wont go into biggest 2 cogs. I've got the h limit screw at its max. Give up and go see the pros?post-44041-0-55044300-1535288432_thumb.jpg

Start by checking if the der hanger is bent. Then go the usual route of limit screws, cable tension and then b screw

I had the same problem when I did the 1x conversion myself, turn the rear derailer cable tension screw at the selector totally in, two turns out and then try readjusting again. Could also be that the cable pulled out somewhere near the adjusters and didn't go back into it's place properly or is getting stuck somewhere.

How tight is the cable in the smallest gear?

(If too loose it won't pull all the way up)

you're referring to at the barrel? I turned it all the way and did a click at a time... can not get to the 2 largest cogs- going down is perfect ...

with the B screw adjustments go to stop catching but then the chain won't go up anymore (sorry my terminology might be whack) - very possible that something is bent I guess.

Forget the barrel - it needs to be set properly with the barrel set in a neutral position the barrel is only used for finer adjustment.

This manual is gold - old but good - go read the section on derailleur setup.

Start at the beginning undo the cable from the derailleur and push the link with your hand. Manually push the derailleur and check that you get the full movement. Also turn out the limit screws rather than turning in. Turning in limits the movement. Until you get this part right you can not proceed with the rest of the setup.

you'd think after all these years I should know this **** :D

i shall read up and watch more YouTube videos - my fiddling made it better and worse - the cogs it can access -- moving through them beautifully - the last 2 that it can't get to  - I could take it a a HTFU you don't need those granny gears :)

thanks ppl - I'll keep fidding,  and the kink in the cable thing might be a pointer - the other day i did clamp a tad too hard on the workstand to the point that nothing worked ... I shall investigate.

This may echo some of the other advice - the way i learned is as follows.

1. undo the deraileur cable

2. set the smallest (11t) gear using the lower limit screw

3. put the cable back on, take up any slack and use the tensioner to set the first up-shift (check that the shifter is shifted all the way down before you put the cable on).

4. check the rest of the shifts - should be close to 100% already

5. shift all the way up and set the upper limit screw so that you prevent the chain being thrown into the spokes. Adjust B-tension if you have issues with the bigger gears.
