I'm also individual for 170km, lets hope the bunches are better than the durbie dash!

Agreed..

Although you caught me and the rode away on the Windmeul climb... I burnt too many matches trying to get away from B bunch and across to the breakaway group.. We worked together nicely on that downhill and the flat part before the climb. I was on the black and yellow foil

I doubt us local cyclists will noticeably improve our bunch riding in 7 days... But it will help if there is less wind on Sunday, think that was the main reason for the lack of groups at the Durbie Dash

Always think its strange when people get faced with wind, instead of sticking in a bunch, they disperse due to the gusty winds moving people.

My comment not so much about local cyclists ability, but more hoping that the bigger event will have better attendance and more cyclists in the bunches to work with.

And fingers crossed my 1 race after 2 years hiatus will do something for my seeding...

You looked like you had been alone in that wind for quite a while, pity we couldn't keep that small group together, would have helped a lot toward the end.

I think a "weaker" rider can wheel suck nicely in a group when the wind is from the back & front. With strong crosswinds like we had on Saturday you either have to be pretty strong to survive in the gutter or know exactly where to position yourself in the bunch otherwise you get blown out?

But yes, not particularly clever riding to find yourself on your own in a race for long periods in strong winds.

My 60mm rims were terribly twitchy; one strong  lateral gust very nearly pushed me off the road around the 20km mark.  I voluntarily dropped out of the bunch immediately after that as murder-suicide is not my thing.

I have shallow wheels that I usually throw on for windy conditions, but hungover at 4:30am on a Saturday morning that bit of logic escaped me.

Yeah rode away from the bunch at 20kms and was solo till you guys came and helped for that little bit, then caught the back of A bunch, they were on a coffee stroll I think so I rode away and very soon after that regretted my decision, mot knowing the route really, at 15kms to go I asked 1 rider how many climbs left, he said 1 long 1 left, I decided to roll the dice, nobody came with me and I ended up doing a solo last 15kms which hurt properly.

But I'll see you on Sunday at the start line hopefully.

We now need breathalyzer tests done in start chutes then

For me, I got bored sitting in the bunch going at 25km/h, at one stage my HR was only in Z2 and when the wind blew gusts across the road, we had play dodge ball because not all riders could handle their bikes.

I thought I would cut my losses and endure the pain as only I was going to benefit at the end of the race.

I came in 14mins before the bulk of the bunch that I left with so I was happy with that considering it was a majority of a solo effort, if it was a longer race with better seeded groups, I would have probably just stuck it out in the bunch.

You also get that, this group is too slow for me, what are they doing, I will drop em category of new rider. One of the ladies did this, only for 20km the group to catch her with a whole lot of energy wasted.

You learn and you enjoy, thats the whole point.

Saw someone with 80's on and was like... Someone has come for a party!

I have made that little mistake few times myself... Not amusing when riders who earlier could not hold your wheel breeze past you fresh as daisies!

Why does it look like I'll be the only oke doing the 170km individual event?? Everyone else I know seems to be doing the 109km..

I'm there. Desperately looking for some form. I fully expect to explode into a thousand bits at about 120kms, and then spend about 3 hours lying in a ditch until I regain the courage to limp home to the finish.
