2017 Dura Ace C45 - failing?

Recently noticed, but might have been there all along, what appears to be the clear-coat "disturbed", my guess is when spokes were tightened.

Bought these wheels new less than a year ago, and they've been running true, just unsure if this is something to be concerned about, or if this is leading to disaster.

The white does not seem to spread any further than the small area around most of the spokes, not all.

Did some quick research but nothing similar came up...

Opinions?

That’s bubbling of the clear coat. Seems to happen to a lot of carbon components in and around areas where a metallic component is attached and high stress areas. Tells me it’s a two fold problem. The area isn’t properly electrically insulated so introduce an electrolyte (salt water/ sweat) and the clear coat isn’t flexible.

I see this a lot on clear coated carbon frames near the cable guides and B.B. shell

So no cause for concern?

i'd still take them back to the shop where you bought them and get their opinion.

i had something similar looking happen to a both front and rear wheel on my Darkhorse wheels. sent them down and was told that it was nothing to worry about. next ride as i finished i looked down to see the front rim collapsing inward on the left.

both wheels were immediately warranty replaced and i sold them off as soon as i got them back.

Not an option unfortunately.

I'd at least get an opinion from Coolheat and I hope you insured the wheels.

If you can flake the clear coat of with a finger nail then you can more closely inspect for cracks.

Generally its not a concern but looking at the nipples in the wheel they are showing signs of heavy corrosion which suggests you may want to consider a rebuild with brass nipples and stainless washers on the inside as well.

One of the Savage's had this exact wheelset and that happened, had them replaced under warranty as it turns out its the carbon flexing and cracking the clear coat.

In all honesty, they will probably not fail catastrophically any time soon. (There is a fair whack of carbon around those nipples)

They just wont look as sweet as they did the day you bought them.

OK, not the news I was hoping for but appreciate the feedback.

Interestingly though, the surface is smooth where this is occurring, so guess it's still on it's way to the surface then?

What news were you hoping for? Some pitch fork mob?

Yes that's how I see it. that rim is built with an Aluminum rim and a carbon fairing bonded to the rim. There's quite a bit of flex in the system. the longer cracks to the clear coat are from the flex. the bubbles are from the galvanic corrosion between the nipples and the carbon. The underside of the carbon will have some white powder. This will start to limit the movement of the nipple making the wheel less tolerant to side loading and will buckle more easily.

If you can't get a warranty sorted, Coolheat can at least tell you its not structural or is structural and advise on a course of action. Might be as simple as a repaint and rebuild. They're really good wheels so worth hanging onto

A little Carbon fiber assembly paste will slow down the corrosion also good for the seat post if you don't want it to become permanent fixture in your frame

Not an option unfortunately.

Aren't you going to be near there in a few weeks time? Surely ANY shimano agent can look at the wheel and organise replacement?
