Can be an expensive experiment if it does not work

It will work, you will probably need to get a Wolftooth Roadlink though to enable the rear derailleur to shift to the 40 tooth cog.

Forgot to mention , currently have Eagle on the bike . So fitting a road bar it would be cheaper to just get SRAM road shifters and a 11 speed cassette and use the Eagle jockey adjusted to 11 speed ?

I doubt very much that 11 speed Sram road shifters will work with an Eagle derailleur.

As far as I know Shimano road & mtb compatibility stopped at 9 speed. 10 speed road STI will work with a 9-speed pre-dynasys mtb RD, to give you `10 speeds, but not with a 10-sp mtb RD.

I'm assuming 11-sp is the same, but don't know for sure. What does google say?

Google says that 11sp Shimano road shifters are not compatible with 11sp MTB derailleurs or any other MTB derailleurs for that matter.

Having said that with the availability of 11-32 ROAD cassettes, if it's to be used as a true gravel bike and not some CX/XCO thing as some think then surely it will be enough?

I'm running 105 10-Speed STI's with a 10-Speed Deore XT Derailleur, for what it's worth.

I'm not, I'm an idiot and it's 9-Speed RD

my 2c, I know it's not the same thing - I've tried running 10spd XT shifters with a 10spd 105 (road) deraileur and that didn't work. Had to change the deraileur to 10spd XT and that was cool. Everything else was Shimano 105

Based on that, my guess would be that road shifters would not work with a mtb deraileur

11 speed road shifters with an 11 speed road derailleur and a 11 speed 11-40 mtb cassette. Like I said earlier get a wolftooth roadlink to enable the road derailleur to shift to the 40t and it will work.

That's really interesting. All the web info I could find when I was looking at a similar issue suggested that this shouldn't work. Supposedly compatibility between Shimano road STI and MTB derailleurs stopped at 9sp.

Out of interest, what cassette are you running?

I once converted a mountain bike to a "Munga bike" for a customer. He had XX1 11spd on the bike and we put Sram Force X1 hydro shifters on the bike. The Force shifters didn't work very well with the XX1 derailleur, so we swopped it out for a Force X1 derailleur and it worked perfectly with the 42t cassette.

I suppose this isn't really at all applicable to your situation, but just thought I'd share  :D

I've just done a trip running a 2x setup giving me a 32x36 easiest gear. With the weight of my gear, the gradients and the road surface, I could easily have done with an additional gear or two.

To put it into perspective, I ride around CT with a 39x25 easiest on my road bike do it's not like I'm used to spinning up climbs.

Of course I guess I could always just spend some time in the gym..[emoji55]

11-36 MTB cassette, I think.
