The suspects who allegedly stole from sleeping passengers aboard a South African Airways (SAA) flight en route to Hong Kong from Johannesburg could not be arrested "as there was no evidence linking them directly to the incident".

This is after two passengers approached the flight's cabin crew before landing, complaining that they had lost their valuables while they were asleep.

SAA spokesperson Tlali Tlali confirmed on Thursday that the incident happened on Flight SA 286 on Monday.

"One of the complainants was able to point out a few passengers who had behaved in a suspicious manner in the cabin and who were seen opening some overhead compartments while other passengers were sleeping," said Tlali.

He said the complainants had lost their money and a watch.

Tlali said once the matter was brought to the attention of the crew, they followed procedures in managing complaints or incidents of that nature

Now are these thieves really going to buy a R10k air ticket to pilfer sleeping passengers belongings? I think not.

The answer I propose that freebie / discounted tickets are acquired via staff benefits and/or corrupt dealings for these guys by SAA staff, A relative of mine worked at SAA all his life, so I know these perks are possible for family and relatives of employees.  Surely it would be so easy to track this down, if only there was a will...or someone with an iota of morality.

I won't moan about generally bad service and attitudes by SAA In-flight attendants and how they disappear into the back of the aircraft as soon as humanly possible and then proceed to talk $h!t all night. Oh I just did.

Do yourself a favour if you are flying to the East, try Singapore Air. The total polar opposite of SAA in this regard.

SAA is a real piece of **** airline, crew, management don’t care.

On our flight to New York, the crew moved people from their seats so that the crew members could take up whole rows to lie down and sleep through the night.

Come again?

I would tell them to get lost.

Come again?

People in the middle row of 4 seats were moved to other empty seats so that 3 rows were cleared and the crew lay down across the seats and slept.

Apparently because it’s a 15 hour flight this was their “seat time”...

Even though they have suitably equipped crew rest stations, at the back or in some cases down/upstairs, they are supposed to rotate staff (some rest, some are on duty).

This really does not come as a surprise, it is consistent with their general disregard and disdain for passengers / customers. Its the culture of entitlement at work.

Find that hard to believe, considering long-haul flights have crew quarters.

Personally I've had a very low opinion of SAA since that low-class CEO Gert van der Veer grinned while talking about the Helderberg tragedy.

However, I had to use SAA recently to go to Lagos, and I was astonished at the high level of service and friendliness by the cabin crew in the economy cabin. Way nicer than BA. I had a quiet chat to one of the stewards who confided that they realised the public doesn't like SAA, but they feel the dislike is focused on management (surprise?) and that crew are doing their best to change that.

They've got my respect now.

Theft on aircraft is not an SAAthing. It’s a ppl thing. Could an does happen on any airline. You think crooks target SAA cos the economy passengers are wealthier. Noooit my bra.

As to cabin crews, I have occasion to fly a lot. They all suck in the cheap seats. Too many passengers not enough crew.

True .... Economy generally sucks,  especially on the trip home, and its generally pot luck in terms of service with most of the carriers. Occasionally I give SAA a go on the long haul to the East hoping things might have improved, they never have and consistently regret the decision.

Singapore on the other hands never fails to please. Maybe its the Tiger beer that puts me in a good mood.

But getting back to  this theft issue, its recurring with SAA and I believe there are connections to staff.

I’m an Emirates guy. 1st choice for me when I can. Have had many (and I travel a lot!!) good flights with great friendly service.

My cousins a Captain on their A380 program. We’ve had many conversations and I’ve always been impressed by their business practices.

Must be honest though. I’ve become way to “lose” with my wallet, passport, phone, watch etc. on flights and in the lounges. Some good old due diligence for me from now on.
