Racetec Chip Mount - thru axle

Guys, this Racetec chip mount is designed for use with a QR (which AFAIK is now pretty much superseded by the thru axle). The hole in the mount is clearly too small to accomodate a 15mm thru axle. I understand from what I read that the thing must be mounted vertically, close to the ground. I read that mounting directly to the fork may cause interference - although I wonder whether using a piece of insulating rubber as a backing wouldn't solve that issue.

Anyone got any clear advice on how to mount it to the bike then?

Mounted it directly on my fork, no issues with timing.

Thank you. Just directly on the metal with cable ties? How many races have you ridden with no issues?

Yip. Also seen people put it on with a Velcro strap. Only done one race but a friend of mine has done it Multiple times with no issue.

Thank you Dean.

Had mine either on a velco strap on my ankle or taped to my fork leg for years. Never had an issue in either location, its always picked up by the mats.

just attached to my shoe, no issue what so ever for 3 years

done the same and road and MTB for about 5 years no issue. However MTB now has it's pen boards and timing chips. T funrides and both times not picked up.

Note: thier issue that it has to be vertical is also a lot of bull. I have mine threaded through the front Velcro strop on my shoe.

Two small cable ties on the fork, no issues for over 20 races. I used the Velco strap to start, but its one more thing to have to remember to put on and it didn't always feel comfortable

The vertical and not near metal thing is more for mass start events and road races, where the matts can only read so many chips at once. Therefore, chips need to be optimally placed.

If you roll over on your lonesome it does not really matter where the chip is.

is it a carbon frame though?

It will have no negative effect if placed on carbon.

I’ve had mine on a carbon fork for ever, probably 100+ races, with no issues.

The chip orientation could be important, depending on the RFiD antennae they use - if they use linear antennae the orientation must be as indicated to decrease missed scans. Racetec seems to use linear antennae, but have multiple mats, so they tend to have signals bouncing and picking up chips that are not optimally orientated. So if they indicate vertical, it would be better to have ot vertical

I agree that carbon is ok. I'm wondering about my Alu fork. I'm thinking of putting it on the velcro of my shoe even though not recommended and the ankle strap seem irritating
