Okay, now back to business.

With December almost halfway done, let's look to the new year and see how we can challenge ourselves to step out of our comfort zones. For that, I propose 'Veganuary'.

Veganuary is a campaign to have people try out a plant-based diet for the month of Jan. There is an accompanying website that has an absolute wealth of into (recipes, FAQs, etc.) that can be used. It's that simple.

Knowing that a full plant-based diet is perhaps a bridge too far for some at this time, I propose a second challenge: 'Reductionuary'. Doesn't quite roll off the tongue, but the idea is to go on an animal product reduction 30 day challenge. Basically, the idea is to get ~90% of your daily calories from plant sources and the rest can be 'spent' on animal products. Cronometer will be needed in this challenge and I can run a simulation to see how that would look like.

Even if you have no interest in a plant-based diet, I think it could be interesting just from a cooking perspective - try new dishes, ingredients, etc. Make it a family challenge and involve the whole lot of them.

So, who would be interested?

Genade.. give up alcohol and meat living in SA.. in the same month..this would be suicide ..[emoji2957]

Who is willing to send me the details of a normal day's eating, so that I can crunch the numbers to see how to get from there to about 90% plant calories?

I have no clue what I eat.. the year has been long and it is all becoming fuzzy.

I don't eat breakfast or lunch...but I made beef stir fry with mushrooms and lentils mixed in with rice for supper today.

If I get hungry during the day I generally snack on fruits or nuts.

Yes I know I have bad eating habits.. but I can't eat early[emoji1785] ..and I don't often get hungry during the day..I also seem to live off coffee..

Breakfast: Smoothie of 1 Beet, 1 Banna, 2 straberries, little ginger, half a cup of raw oats, tsp chilli powder, tsp tumeric, tsp cinnamon, tsp honey, 1/2 cup lowfat milk, 175ml low fat yogurt.

Add a crack of black pepper with the turmeric. The two are partners in crime - it increases the potency/availability of turmeric compounds.

Also, do you use chilli on purpose? I've always thought cayenne was the better choice.

What kind of a monster eats raw beet?

If you want to track your motility speed, try eating a bowl of beets and then see how long it takes for you to drop a purple deuce.

I never used to like veggies, so I remember having beetroot for the first time in my life when I was like 25 or 26. After having my morning constitutional I nearly woke my gf (now wife) up to rush me to the hospital - was sure I had internal bleeding.

LOL.

Beetroot on a burger, or actually in any form (roasted, pickled etc) is excellent

It's very lekker.

Hated it as a kid though. Got served it during Sunday lunches, real old skool Boere style. Within 2 minutes all of your boiled and mashed-to-death veggies were dyed purple.

No meat yesterday, or today, then this evening my buddy laid out some fresh biltong from a SA shop here, and without thinking as I walked past, I took popped some in my mouth. Only clicked afterwards, felt pretty disappointed in myself..... old habits I suppose.

You can’t put a veganist and a new age feminist in the same room at the same time. The two echo chambers cannot exist in the same place, you will create a critical mass of “attention needed” and it will super nova. If you really want to accelerate the reaction, sprinkle a Harley rider or two in there.

This once happened about 13.7 billion years ago, and everybody had to respawn. Some guys at CERN have been trying to recreate this event in a controlled way for years now.

Had to laugh on the weekend. Met up with some old friends at Monte, guess where we ate. The Meat Co.

Took all my will power, but managed a meat free meal. Kudo's to the meat co though, their Red Quinoa Salad is yum!

The big thing is the aspiration. The actions will follow.

You're in for 'Reductionuary'?

I went and bought some meat free "sausages", OMG it was terrible. I don't think anybody since Snow White has had a worse experience with a dozen little worsies.
