Anyway isn't the explosive bit in the tip there?

Prune pilot forum which had some links to a Ukrainian twitter feed this pics.

Yes it’s all speculation

737’s don’t generally catch alight in flight and crash in flames ???? a few minutes later, even if they have a major engine failure the damage should be contained to the engine allowing the crew to land.

There are videos of it burning before impact

From Av Herald:

During the night from Jan 8th to Jan 9th 2020 somebody on Twitter released a photo of a Tor 9K331 warhead presumably found at the crash site (and temporarily even the reader comments below flooded over referencing that photo). The location as well as the authenticity of the photo were not verifyable. The Aviation Herald therefore sent an inquiry to Iran's AIB with the photo, the supposed location at the crash site and relevant links in support and contradicting the authenticity of that photo and asked, whether the accident investigation had found such a part (expressing the hope that these issues wouldn't add too much to the stresses of the AIB). Iran's AIB Chairman responded stating: "We save evidence and wreckage of the aircraft and never found this part. All wreckage parts were transferred to the special hanger in order to investigate with cooperation of NTSB, Ukraine NBAI and other interest parties which has been invited officially." The chairman continued: "Due to special political condition of my country, we instituted a special group more than technical accident investigation groups to assess the condition of Laser attack or dangerous good- electromagnetic (radioactive threat) and unlawful action. The initial conclusion of this group confirmed that there was not found any evidence of mentioned actions on the accident site. Also we will trace all other evidences of the accident by gathering all information of the accident." The chairman indicated the AIB plans to release a preliminary first report in English during Jan 9th 2020.

If it was shot down by accident.... mistaken identity, do you think the Iranian AIB would admit it?

Those SAM missiles take out aircraft flying at altitude, maybe a sidewinder type but anyway there are many reason why a fire could have broken out just after takeoff, its all speculation, BS IMHO,

Why repeat information that can not be verified?  that you can not link to or reference to  reputable source?

This would be very interresting as a year or two ago a 737-800 in the US suffered a catastrophic engine failure.  Blade debry pierced the fuselage and actually killed a passanger.  That plane could land however.

This aircraft could also have suffered the same but instead a blade could have ruptured the fuel tank/fuel line then you could have a situation like this where the pilots can not do much.  Remember Air France Concorde as a tyre pierced the fuel tank?

As you say.  So much could have happened.  Iran should release the Black Boxes for examination as quickly as possible and that they get to the bottom of the problem to this.  I don't think that in this case an investigation will take that long to get the cause of the accident.

Who knows .. media is going 'ballistic' over this,as they do.  The timing suggests something could have been mistakenly fired, Lest we forget  Iran Air Flight 655  shot down by the US Navy.

Ukraine has been invited to review the black box data, I can understand the refusal of anything to do with the US but really Canada should have access though, so many perished.

The Ukrainian flight that crashed just outside the Iranian capital of Tehran was struck by an anti-aircraft missile system, a Pentagon official, a senior U.S. intelligence official and an Iraqi intelligence official told Newsweek.

Lot of scorched surfaces there - fuel tanks must have been violated by something, which caught fire and made the aircraft unflyable.

I read that the Tor 9K331 has a minimum range of 1.something km and minimum height of 10m but how does it work? kinetic impact / explosive warhead on impact or does it explode before impact and cause distruction by shrapnel?

Guidance and fusing is most often at the tip, ordnance (explosive bit) immediately behind, then rocket motors at the back.
