I know it's short, but to me it's cherished, as most of it was done for work, which allowed me to experience new places in the name of earning a buck. Good memories all round.

You must be talking about something else because the list above is not short :whistling:  ;)

Boeing 747-200 SAA (LHR to JNB in 1976)

Boeing 747-SP Air Namibia (FRA - JNB via WDH) Plane is at Rand Airport Museum now!

Boeing 747-400 BA (JFK to LHR last November)

Boeing 757-300 Monarch (LGW - ALC)

Airbus A380-800 Air France (JNB - CDG)

Lockheed L-1011 - (Tri Star) Air Portugal (LIS - JNB via Brazaville)

Silly fact about the 757. The cockpit sits lower than the cabin. There is a slight step down into the cockpit. If you don't realise you A: bump your head and B: sort of trip. I don't know why they designed it like that.

Those Sp's were beaut's.

I remember a few visiting George over the years. I was always fascinated by the awkward yet elegant size of them. I last saw one from Alliance Air visit George in the early 2000's.

My last helicopter flip was in 2009. I was lucky enough to be invited along on a "short" hop to go refuel at GRJ from Buffalo Bay caravan park. We ended up flying along the coast to Knysna, did a lap around the lagoon and back to Buffels, and then on to George, getting redirected around town due to incoming traffic, and then we carried on to Mosselbay, turning at Pinnacle Point, before flying back to GRJ, where we landed to refuel. Departed again to Buffels bay, diverting around Swartvlei at Sedgefield, before finally heading out to Buffels at low level over the beach. All in all, a flight of around 2.5 hours in a 3 ship formation consisting of a Bell Jet Ranger and a Bell Long Ranger as well as a Robinson R44. The Robinson had to divert to George as we headed to Mosselbay due to a lack of fuel.

The random fact I can't forget about the SP - its tail was over a metre taller than any other 747 variant. (And why, to compensate for the reduced moment arm with the shorter fuselage).

I hated the look of the SP. The lines of the 747-200 (and the later 747-400) were just so much easier on the eye.

and the fact that it was so short meant it looked even taller than that. Even if it was the same height it would still have looked taller. It was about 5 foot taller. I wouldn't say I hated it but I will admit it did look funny but that is probably because I compared it to the -200 or -400 and those certainly are beautiful.

I dunno. I like the SP. It's a mongrel for sure, but a beautiful mongrel. I will agree though that of the range, the 200 is the most elegant in my view, although the new 747-8 is a looker. It has such graceful lines. Last year I was disembarking from Swaziland in ORTIA, and watched the Lufthansa 747-8i being pushed back from the gate. It is a very beautiful plane that.

Not the MD-80

"The Boeing 717 is a twin-engine, single-aisle jet airliner, developed for the 100-seat market. The airliner was designed and originally marketed by McDonnell Douglas as the MD-95, a derivative of the DC-9 family. Capable of seating up to 134 passengers, the 717 has a design range of 2,060 nautical miles (3,820 km). It is powered by two Rolls-Royce BR715 turbofan engines mounted at the rear of the fuselage."

I flew on the 1Times MD-80's a lot commuting to CT - loved the experience, esp. at the back where you could see / hear / feel those jet engines.

I think  Luxavia took over a lot of SAA 747-SP's - flew many times in the 80's and early 90's  - cheaper than SAA

It was one class arrangement BUT if you were in the know you could sit upstairs for an extra R70

First time I flew with them was on an old SAA 707 - that was my 707 experience. Stopped at least twice for fuel to get to Luxemburg

Exactly how they ended up with the SAA stock I can't say but because they were Luxembourg registered they could fly over Africa and not around the bulge like SAA had to do

Firstly, Thanks for all those awesome pics. WOW ORT has changed a lot.

Sure - it was fun trolling the Interweb for BOAC and Jan Smuts last night :)  I've flown BA a few times, not really my cup of tea, Virgin neither.

Sadly I am of the age to remember when there was just one terminal at Jan Smuts. My dad used to fly to Europe on business trips a lot, and it was always exciting to see him off and meet him when he came back. He flew the BOAC VC-10 a few times. I think its a beautiful aircraft, flawed as it was.
