wynnie7 Posted January 21, 2019 Share I fitted a SRAM NX 1/12 on my GIANT, the chainring that came standard with the kit was a 32T. I want to fit a 34T or 36T because I spin out on 40km/h. Any suggestions on witch one I need to go for. Edited January 21, 2019 by wynnie7

Me rida my bicycle Posted January 21, 2019 Share Depending on how strong you are the 34 and even more so 36 is going to make climbing challenging. I would suggest 34t a 4tooth jump is quite big on the front.

I ride with a 34 tooth oval chainring and my speed vs cadence is spot on to what the bikecalc gear calculator says it should be for a 34 tooth chainring. Grease_Monkey Posted January 22, 2019 Share 34 oval is the way to go. Offers the speed of a 36 and the climbing ability of a 32. No it doesn't. I'm a believer in oval rings, but a 34t is a 34t, and it will not go any faster than a round 34t - it comes down to ratios, and that stays the same for a given size no matter what the shape of the ring is. It does however feel harder to turn on the down stroke and easier to turn on the upstroke due to it's shape. The only advantage this gives is it allows you to more easily and smoothly keep the pedals turning on a climb. I find this useful only on low cadence techy climbs where it is hard to keep the pedals turning even in granny gear. OP, oval/round, whatever you decide on - unless you are a very good climber or live in a flatter area a 36t is very big, so 34t is probably the way to go. It should give you the extra top end you are looking for. If you do decide to go 36t, just make sure your frame has clearance for such a big ring, many frames do not.
