Can we please stop with all these Dear John letters? Seems like every second thread lately has been an open letter of sorts. If you have a problem with someone stop them and speak to them. If they don't wanna stop and engage with you or flips the bird at you they probably won't give two hoots about anything you write on BikeHub either.

Make the Hub great again!

Could not agree with you more, well said.

Now let's do as @grease monkey says

Show me the stats where horrible cycling resulted in the death of the cyclist vs horrible driving resulting in the death of cyclists

I'd like to see those stats too - I think you might be surprised... It would be insensitive to go into detail but I can think of more than 1 recent example of bad cycling having very unfortunate outcomes. There are many, many very bad (and generally very arrogant) cyclists out there.

I did not say never so no words in my mouth please.

So in the time it took you too describe three bad cycling incidents I witnessed 47 moving violations by motorists; two of those involved cyclists being cut off by a car turning left right in front of the cyclists.

The count is now up to 61

But ya hey I guess flashing red lights must be the root cause

How many cars in total did you see and how many bicycles? I'm just trying to work out what exactly you are trying to say with this.

Even if you try the ratio thing, motorists are still worse than cyclist (well most cyclists, as there is the one dude in my area)

I have done the count, % wise....most days I got between 1-5% of cyclists vs 30% motorist.....

How many motorist sit and text as a traffic light? Then when / if yo usay something they always has this excuse "I am not moving"

And based on THAT response I can tell you that MOTORIST knows LESS about the traffic rules that cyclist (at least the ones who has a license to drive a car also)

the problem with unsafe raods is not badly behaved cyclists. Its motorists.

Two accidents at this intersection outside the office yesterday.

one car running a red light, the other the car behind driving into the car infront of it because the driver didn;t have his foot on the brakes and bump. Two bent bumpers and a traffic jam.

If a cyclist wants to run a red light and play russian roulette, why lose your mind over that? its natural selection in action.

But why should a guy like Ashraf have his life changed because a motorist broke multiple laws?

Some of my petrolhead chums lurk on cycling forums because they love to read how cyclists rip each other apart when it comes to road safety. Their take away is that cyclists know they don;t belong on the roads.

Cyclists don't kill other cyclists

Cyclists don't kill motor vehicles.

Motor vehicles kill cyclists

Motor vehicles kill other motor vehicles

Sure there's basic rules we need to follow. the same counts for motor vehicles.

the argument that cyclists must first abide by the law if we expect motorists to respect us is farcical. Respect is given because of life, yet cyclists continually advocate that this respect for cyclists should be conditional.

Even a family of ducks gets more respect than a cyclist in Cape Town. (observed this morning)

The problem with unsafe roads is the people that use the roads - this includes bus drivers, truck drivers, taxi drivers, motorists, motorbikers, cyclists, and pedestrians.

EVERYONE disobeys the rules, some more than others, and if you are in a cage you always come out on top because that's just how physics works. It is everyone's responsibility to follow the rules of the road, but let's face it - that is not gonna happen.

So if you are on bike, your feet, or a motorbike start thinking for others and drive defenisvely. No it's not right, it doesn't solve any problems, but it keeps you alive.

The fact of the matter is that people that disobey rules will disobey them no matter what form of transport they use when on the road. A **** in the car is a **** on a bike is a **** as a pedestrian. The problem with SA roads are SA road users, it's a culture of my rights/wants/needs/time matters more than anyone else's.

I may be a bit pesimistic about the whole thing, but I've been on a motorbike since I was 16 and have realised that the majority of road users don't care (or know) about what the law says, they just care about getting to the next red light 5mins faster than you. I like to at least think that the majority of cyclists and motorbikers become better, more aware drivers because of this - but there are always outliers.

The pits for me is when an oke with bikes on the back of his car nearly takes out cyclists on the road on the way back from his morning ride.

You need to ask yourself why?
